There was that sigh again. That really worried him. He hesitated. “I… thank you.” Then she took the blame for his reaction. He wasn’t sure what to make of that part. Maybe she was like him, and he only came out and said he was directly sorry to several choice people. To the rest, he kept his better-than-you attitude usually, though he was getting better. Or worse, if you asked certain members of his family. The guy who would willingly spend his paycheck if his sister was having a bad day and needed a smoothie. They guy who actually didn’t kill people who had personally betrayed him. Okay, so it was easier to buy Mattie smoothies. Part of him wondered what Bellona would think of him if she knew how, well, soft he could be. It was kind of nerve-wrecking.
Family. He could live with that, certainly. Even given how very unusual the bond between the members of his family could be. War was an interesting thing to bond over. But he nodded all the same. “I would be honored… aunt.” He’d never had an aunt before, or at least a present one. His mother had had a sister, but she lived in Oregon and the two sisters didn’t get along, so he never met her and grew up under the idea that he probably didn’t want to either. The other side of his family, he’d never put much thought to. Mars was his father and of course he’d known he had immortal aunts and uncles, but seeing as the majority of his life there was that whole law of no interference kind of thing – though he blamed it on being too busy until he knew about that – he never thought he would ever come to call them ‘family’ either. Now here he was, 23 years old and meeting his immortal aunt for the first time. It was… curious. He was actually a little excited about this.
But right, goddess of battle here, who was unhappy about their fight ending so soon. So naturally he offered to take it up again. He smiled a little, not sure if he was supposed to really, at what he perceived as a joke about her not wanting another cut too soon. There was a wink, so he felt safe assuming it was a joke. Surely he could not get so lucky a shot twice. “No, no, I’d enjoy talking actually.” He sheathed his sword. “We could even go to the local coffee joint. My treat. Call it a ‘nice to meet family’ occasion.”
