Side Trip! || Felicity/Edmund

Weingarten had agreed to a little side trip. Ed knew she would. He supposed that was the one good thing about having Weingarten as a transportation buddy. She, like him, didn't exactly want to do this quest thing, so any distractions were welcome. Besides, he couldn't pass up an opportunity like this... They landed underneath the middle of a side bridge, in only gods knew where. Above them were the sounds of cars zooming along whatever highway they were under. Where they were didn't matter, as long as those Party City corporations were still running. From what he had seen when he had gone out with her before, the world had changed very little in the seven years he had been away. He knew that it was far from Halloween, but they probably still had the supplies that Ed had in mind somewhere. If not, he could always break into their storage room. Hey, the others should have seen something akin to this coming as soon as the world "cathedral" came out of Roger's mouth. Plus, take into account that two people were shadow traveling and it was all just too much of a perfect set up. Sure, Edmund didn't seem like the pranking type (he would leave that up to the Mercury kids) but still, he wouldn't pass up a chance like this.

Still a new comer to shadow travel, Edmund swayed on the spot slightly before blinking and getting his vision back. Despite the feeling of nausea that washed over him for a few seconds, he felt fine. He looked at Felicity. "You alright?" he asked, starting to take count of their surroundings. No one seemed to be traveling under the bridge at the moment: no cars visible. Good, the less people who saw them, the better. He waited, keeping watch for anything/one while Weingarten recuperated from their first shadow travel. Out of the two of them, shadow traveling was probably the most taxing on the actual person doing it, which was Weingarten. Ah well, they could take their sweet time. Rogers said that they'd teleport themselves and Lyn to a park. Maybe they'd get distracted by a dog or whatever, who knew. Ethan and Lyn could probably come up with enough distractions to last a life time. They could think that Ed and Felicity drowned in the Atlantic for all he cared.

A Party City, one of those chained companies scattered all about the United States. That was what she was aiming for. Not a certain specific town, therefore, she had no idea where she was as her and Edmund emerged out of the shadows. As she looked around all she could process at the moment was that they were under a bridge. That was good, she guessed. She rubbed her temples for a moment. It was the nice little headache she got, luckily it wasn't too bad at the moment. If it worsened she could always open up the bottle of advil that was conveniently stored within her backpack. She took a deep breath before nodding slightly at Edmunds question. "Yeah, I'm fine. What about you?" Felicity asked. She wasn't exactly sure what he dealt with during shadow travel, hopefully nothing too bad since all previous trips had been short distance. However she knew that when they both went to England it was going to be hard on them.

She glanced around. Catching sight of a few buildings a few yards away. "Well, not exactly what I was shooting for. I was hoping to land in a Party City, but there must be one nearby. Just keep an eye out for monsters okay? I don't know where we are. We could be in Canada for all we know." Granted, Felicity didn't know if Canada was exactly known for their monsters either. Wasn't Canada suppose to be insanely nice or whatnot? Oh well, as soon as they catch sight of a license plate then they will know where they are, roughly. Felicity figured they were still in America though since it didn't take them long to get there and the fact that the trip felt like a short distance one based on the after effects she had. If they had gone long distance Felicity would have a killer migraine or might have even passed out as soon as they emerged out of the shadow. Speaking of passing out, she hoped that wouldn't happen once they got to the Cathedral. It would ruin all their fun if they exited out of the shadows into the congregation only to pass out at their feet a few seconds later.

Edmund looked around, trying to figure out where they were. Bridge and cars above them. That could be outside of Camp for all he knew. Maybe Weingarten knew that a Party City was around this vicinity and that's why she traveled here. Now that he thought about it: how long had it been since Edmund went to a Party City? Probably Halloween at age eight. What had he been for that last Halloween anyway? He couldn't even remember. All he remembered is walking past a smoke maker infront of a grave yard set up that said 'out of order'. He had made an attempt to fix it, but all the other adults had shooed him away. Edmund also remembered them having a gigantic balloon wall. As a little kid with dyslexia, he didn't like reading them, but he liked seeing all the different colors and shapes decorating the wall. He had liked hearing the machine work as it pumped helium into the flat balloons. The male demigod looked over at Weingarten and nodded. "I'm alright," he said with a slight shrug. He felt about the same as he had when Felicity took him to Las Vegas. Perhaps they hadn't traveled far. He hoped making the gigantic continent jump wouldn't be too horrible, but then again, when did anything go smoothly for him?

The seventeen year old nodded at her and then started to walk towards the buildings, keeping a sharp eye out for anything that could potentially be dangerous. So she didn't know where they were... he supposed she was just aiming for a Party City. From what he remembered they were all over the US. Then again, they could have expanded to Mexico or Canada. Who knew? American franchises had a way of spreading internationally, or so he had heard. He looked a couple of yards away, seeing a parking lot. Squinting, he tried to read the license plates on the cars. Maybe that'd give them a clue to where the were. "If we were in Canada wouldn't there be more of those..." Edmund scowled slightly, trying to remember the small detail from his life before the Legion, "birds," he finally remembered. "Geese. Or are they a misnomer?" he asked, his voice semi teasing. Now he remembered: they were called Canadian Geese. It had always confused him when he was little.

Felicity walked alongside Edmund as they made their way to the buildings. A smirk crept onto her face. "Possibly." Honestly Felicity didn't know what Canada would have. She hadn't exactly been there. Well, she wanted to. It was on her list of places to go to eventually. Once she left the legion of course. Sure, it was going to be dangerous and some people might not approve of it but she was going to see the world, no matter what. Ah, she wasn't focusing, she needed to keep a clear head just in case a monster decided to pop up somewhere.

As the buildings got close enough to make out exactly what each building said Felicity smiled. There was a Party City. That was lucky. She thought they might have to walk forever. Or heck, maybe whatever divine thing that controlled Shadow Travvel might have decided to literally put them in a party city, like Las Vegas or New Orleans. However, Felicity was pretty sure that where they were at was neither of those place. She lead the way to the party city and grabbed the door, doing the polite thing and holding it open for Edmund before walking into the store. "Should we ask someone, or are we winging it?" Felicity asked, slightly in jest. Edmund wasn't exactly the talking to strangers type and Felicity well, she usually didn't like to ask for help.

"Always confused me until I finally got the concept of migration," Edmund said with a smirk. Maybe that was one reason he kind of got looked at oddly when growing up. All of Ed's school mates just accepted the fact that Canadian Geese walked around Poughkeepsie. Edmund? No, he questioned it every day. Why would something with a specific, geographic name be somewhere it shouldn't be? It had made absolutely no sense to the four year old. Then again, what'd he know? Practically next to nothing if someone looked at his grades. Now that he was a demigod, he supposed they were all like Canadian Geese. Demigods surrounded in a world with mortals, when they actually belonged in Camp Jupiter/New Rome. Then, after, if they so chose, they could go back into the mortal world. Edmund probably wasn't going to be doing that. He had no where to go. Simple as that. He'd probably end up serving the Legion until he died (which could very possibly be any day now). ....what kind of a tangent had that been? Random. Stupid ADHD.

As the duo got closer, Edmund saw a building with the gigantic Party City label on the front. Weingarten hadn't done a bad job. Sure, not in the store, but fairly close to it. Edmund's eyes scanned the area, still on edge for any monsters they could possibly summon from their mere presence. With no one in sight and his suspicion quelled for a moment, he stepped into the store as Felicity held the door open for him. "Thanks, Weingarten," he muttered as he passed. Ha! Instances were few and far between, but he could still do formalities if he really wanted. Ed's dark brown eyes blinked, looking around at the stores and the countless isles. He had a very vague memory of being here (different Party City of course, but same layout) but it was hazy, just like any time he tried to remember anything from his past life. "I say we wing it. You want to do the capes and mirrors? I'll look for the smoke maker and devil horns."

Felicity gave a slight nod and a muttered "no problem" as Edmund thanked her for holding the door open. True, maybe the guy should have taken the door first but Felicity was already in front of him and why should such a meaningless task have some form of sexism related to it? How did the matter of who held the door even matter? That was one thing that always boggled Felicitys mind, how such meaningless tasks could have such a side story correlating with some form of an issue. What was wrong with people? Sometimes Felicity wondered if the legion was saner than the normal mortal world but then she remembered that the legion was kids, aged ten and up, who were forced to train to defend their lives and worship an ancient civilization and basically bend over at the gods will. Being a normal mortal must be so much simpler, heck, Felicity might even be allowed to be lazy from time to time if she wasn't the daughter of freaking Pluto.

She smiled at the dark haired boy. "Fair enough. Thank you can handle asking questions if you need to? I know how much you love talking to strangers." Felicity stated teasingly, adding a bit of humor into the side trip was allowed right? It better be. If not it was going to be a bit boring. She looked up at the signs hanging above the aisles holding an assortment of objects that related to parties. Party hats, party plates, pinatas, ballons, costumes, confetti, and all the other stuff people should hope to find to fit their partying needs. "I guess meet once we grab the stuff we can just look for each other, or meet up at the balloon stand." Felicity said as she glanced in that direction of the helium filled colorful plastic. She never understood while people liked balloons. Though she had heard of a rumor that if you inhaled the helium inside you would get a squiky voice. Maybe one day Felicity could find out if it was true but at the moment that was not her key focus. Technically the quest was, but for Felicity at the moment it was finding some awesome stuff to scare a congregation in England.

When Edmund was younger (as in... really really young, as in... six), his parents had always told him to hold the door for people. It was the polite thing to do. It showed he had good manners. Being that his social/school life wasn't that great, Edmund had some hostile feelings about doing that for people who didn't like him. Then again, his parents had asked him and he loved his parents and had wanted to make them happy... so he agreed. He did it for a year. Unlike normal people who would make themselves visible while holding open the door, Edmund would run behind it and hide himself between the wall and the door. He didn't want people seeing him, because that usually led to staring. They all knew he was behind there though and usually ignored him. All the better for him. His career as an invisible door holder stopped at the end of the year though, after someone decided to trip him. Edmund hadn't been that happy and had ended up exploding half the hallway's lightbulbs. Whoops. He was asked not to come back to the school.

"Yes," Edmund muttered with an eye roll. Then he raised his eyebrows as she brought up talking to strangers. "Weingarten...you don't remember stranger danger?" he said, a semi tease in his voice. But all teasing aside, if Edmund didn't like to talk and didn't talk with people he had been stuck with for seven years, he wasn't about to talk to some random person in the middle of a store. Ed's eyes wandered down the labels on the aisles, blinking to try to keep his dyslexia in check. Where would he find a smoke machine... He suddenly wondered if his technokinesis would work if something wasn't plugged in. Probably not, but no harm in trying. At any rate, the devil horns would probably be easier to find. Just find their Halloween stash and steal a devil costume or two. Which also begged the question... how were they going to get his stuff out of here? Ah well, they'd jump that river when they got to it.

"Balloon stand's fine," Edmund nodded, looking over towards the stand so he could try to remember where he needed to end back up. Then again, it was sort of impossible. It was gigantic and infront of the store. With their meeting spot in place, Edmund started to wander off to the back of the store. Stock room or bust. And if he owned a store, he'd have the stock room in the back.

Felicity laughed slightly at the mention of stranger danger. Okay, he had a point, not everyone could be trusted. Heck, someone might be a monster in disguise, that might have been pushing it though. Maybe it was just some teenaged working for minimum wage to get a new car that just wanted to help out a customer so that they didn't get fired. Who knew. Felicity just figured maybe they could try being normal and talking to people, but Edmund would always be Edmund. At least he talked to her more now. It would have been awkward to go through the entire quest with a mute, which Ed was not that long ago. That was an interesting time, yet Felicity missed talking to the forge monkey so she acted normally to him and tried to make him go and have fun. In the end it seemed to have worked out okay.

She nodded and watched as Edmund wandered off to the back of the store. She glanced at the signs labeling off what each aisle held, blinking a few times to keep her dyslexia in check. Stupid demigod problems. Finally once she noticed a label that said costumes she headed that way. She walked past countless reduced price costumes that looked like they were from last years Halloween, however, a majority of the costumes were themed for the summer and fourth of July. Americas independence day. Why didn't the camp take part in that? Most of them were American. Couldn't they at least have fireworks? No? Well darn.

Finally she spotted a few capes. She grabbed two, folding them over her arm as she walked out of the aisle and looked for wherever the heck mirrors would be. There was a few play mirrors. What kind of mirrors were they talking about anyway? She kept wandering around the store. "Ma'am, is there anything I can help you with?" a male voice asked her. She turned around and was saw the worked in his uniform. He looked about eighteen, guessing. He was alright looking from a glance but Felicity was not in the mood to talk, she just wanted to find the mirrors and meet back up with Edmund. "No, just looking." Felicity muttered as she continued on her way, leaving the worker to go bother some other shopper. Finally, Felicity found mirrors she deemed suitable for their little side mission. She grabbed some and headed over to the balloon stand, which didn't have anyone working there at the moment, thankfully. Felicity set the stuff down and went to grab a cart, an idea coming to her head on how to get the stuff out since technically the were going to steal this stuff. They would make such great role models.

The stock room had a lock pad. It wouldn't be locked for long. He put his hand in his pocket (only mildly disturbing the Hello Kitty keychain that dangled from his belt loop) and took out a rectangle that could have passed for a mortal credit card. However, purchasing items was far from the purpose; the device that Ed had in his hand was a deactivator, mostly used around the forge for a sort of "dead man switch". Usually only for emergencies, the person needed only to wave the card within a two feet radius of the invention to make it freeze; it sent out electronic signals that temporarily jammed all electronic signals, just incase any of their inventions went haywire on them. Sadly, Edmund had to use it once on Cinny, and again on Metal Bird while he was remaking it. Did it work on mortal lock pads? Edmund didn't know, but he was about to find out. He waved it near the pad and then heard a slight hum as all the numbers lit up. Suddenly, he had a weird gut feeling that told him all he had to know: he had just deactivated the entire thing. Oh well, they'd have to deal with it later. There was a click as the deactivated lock detached from the door. Oh well, all the easier for him: Ed took the handle and pushed the door open.

Getting in was the easy part. Actually finding the blasted smoke machine proved to be more difficult. Edmund unsheathed his dagger and started opening boxes. For five minutes, he came up with no smoke maker. What he did find though, were the devil horns he needed. Two items down, one to go. After another five minutes of searching, Edmund finally broke into a box that had a smoke maker in it. He knew he and Felicity wouldn't have time to plug this thing in after landing. Heck, he didn't know if they'd be conscious, but still. Edmund popped off the back, dug into his backpack, and took out Cinny's back up battery, still full from the sun. "You'll get this back later," he muttered to his shredder. Within two minutes, Edmund had cut off the external plug had had rerouted the energy source to the battery. After re-boxing, he headed out, and made his way to the ballon stand.

After a few moments, Weingarten came back with a cart. Well, seems like she was successful in her snatches. "Did I miss anything worth mentioning?" the dark haired boy asked, putting down his stuff in her cart, and looking around at the other shoppers. Curiosity nagged at him, even though his voice and face remained as unreadable as ever. He tried remembering times when they had shopped as a family, but couldn't. If he hadn't been Roman... could one of these shoppers been him?

Once Felicity caught side of Edmund she let a soft smile land on her face. Seems he was also successful, at least she figured he was as she glanced at the new items occupying her cart that Edmund had just thrown in. Great, seemed they were all set. The bigger issue, how the heck to get out of there without being seen, sure, there was shadow travel, but there was also videocameras on the ceiling. Felicity wasn't sure how well the mist could play out two teenagers running into a shadow with a cart full of stuff.

At Edmunds question she glanced at him and shook her head. "Nope, everything has been...normal." Felicity said. It was odd, to just go about being normal. No one knew these two were children of gods. Heck, they probably thought they were two random teenagers about to throw a weird party or whatever. They had no idea they were about to try to scare a congregation of innocent church goers. But hey, even demigods needed their fun from time to time. "Hey Edmund, think you can do something about the cameras? We're going to have to shadow travel out and I'm not sure how the mist would play that out. It'd probably be best not to make national news." Felicity explained. Just what they would need, media attention. She could see it now. 'Two teenagers swallowed by shadows in Party City.' because that totally made a lot of sense.

Edmund Simons' capabilities of being useful expanded to only two things, apparently: forging/fixing (but even there he was a fail sometimes) and store snatching (however something could go wrong at the last minute, as it often did with demigods). Honestly, with what he and Weingarten were about to do, they could pass as Mercury kids: stealing and pranking like pros. Who knew? Maybe the god got lazy and decided to shove them off onto other person (in this case gods') responsibility. Hey, it wouldn't have been the first time. To the mortals, their little trick would hopefully send them screaming. Him? He found that doing this was actually giving him a twisted, amused feeling. Almost like he had developed a shred of a sense of humor. Almost. At least he had found someone else who agreed that odd, sick idea of scaring poor, innocent, pious mortals. Hey, if the Legion had taught him anything, it was (a) how to fight (b) how to forge (c) scare people. After living through Lupa's evaluation and Jolly's regimen, Edmund had a pretty good picture of what mortal people could think of as "scary".

At Weingarten's report, Edmund just nodded his head slightly. Pft. Normal. When had demigods ever been normal. Heck, he bet no one could actually define "normal". To a demigod it could be everything from "non existent" to "monsters chasing me and getting kicked out to school" to "training and hoping I don't die". To mortals... dang, Edmund couldn't even remember what it was like to be out among them anymore. These mortals probably just thought that he and Felicity were just two kids who wanted to have an odd, summer part for only gods knew what reason. Perhaps just because they were teenagers and teenagers did random, stupid things. Edmund lived in a Camp full of them for seven years; knowledge by experience.

"Yes," Edmund responded simply to Weingarten's request. She was right, of course. The last thing they needed was media, mortal recognition. Although, he had to wonder, what did some of the stuff that happened to demigods look like to mortals? He knew monsters looked like cheerleaders and normal other people, but what about the other unexplained stuff? Like if Weingarten was to shadow travel infront of them? With those thought still floating around his head, Edmund concentrated on trying to find the security cameras and their live feed. It took a few seconds to find all of them, and then another few seconds to telepathically connect to the system. "Whenever you're ready, Weingarten," he said quietly, "the cameras are experiencing some technical difficulties and will be showing snow for the next minute or so."

Felicity let out a soft smirk once Edmund stated that the cameras were out of commission at the moment. That was perfect, just what they needed to get the heck out of the store with their goodies in tow. However, this was going to be the big jump, the leap across the ocean. Felicity had to mentally prepare herself, get in the zone. She couldn't rick passing out in the middle of the shadow travel, that would be horrendous. She took a few deep breaths before glancing over at Edmund. His life was in her hands. This guy was her best friend, even if he wouldn't admit it. Heck, one-sided best friend then. She didn't want to end up hurting him, that would kill her inside. The only person she cared more about than Edmund would probably be Remus, those two boys, no, they were men, they've grown up enough, were tied for Felicity. She couldn't survive knowing the other one wasn't there on this planet with her.

She exhaled a final deep breath before nodding and clenching the cart. "Either link arms or hold the cart, just keep up and make sure I don't pass out." Felicity managed to get out before glancing at the wide shadow playing across the aisle in front of them. It was going to be like going downhill on a rollercoaster since this shadow was on the ground. How long it would take them to get to Europe? She had no idea, but it was a hell of a time to find out.

Edmund looked directly at one of the video cameras, wondering how the people up at the security booth were taking this. Probably not well. Hopefully, by the time they situated themselves, Felicity and Edmund would be gone. Noticing how serious and concentrated Weingarten was getting, Edmund decided to buy them more time. Who knew with the mortals? The security men could decide to go look out of their stations themselves. Edmund knew where video cameras were, not humans, and if the security guards' station was near where Felicity was deciding to shadow travel, that wouldn't go over well. It took Edmund a second, but he found the switch board again and made it slowly start to clear up of snow, but pointed all of them to one location: the stock room door. Far away from them. Even though the picture wasn't clear, at least it showed something other than thick, black and white snow. Perhaps it would keep the mortal's interest at bay, keeping them in their station.

Knowing the seriousness of the situation, Edmund gave a nod, watching Weingarten's grip on the cart tighten. "I'll make sure of that," he grumbled. It was enough that he was being put on this stupid, gods forsaken quest. Having Felicity pass out and/or the possibility of them getting dumped in the ocean did not make for a happy Edmund. Then again, when was he ever happy? Okay, scratch that then... more grumpy than usual. Linking arms or holding onto the cart was a no brainer: Edmund stretched out his left arm, his face pausing in a slight wince, before clenching onto the cart. Holding on, keeping up, and keeping Felicity conscious. Slightly a life or death situation here. Heck, quests in general were situations of life or death. Figuring he'd probably either throw up or faint at the opposite end, but still half hoping that they could pull off their church escapade, Edmund waited until Weingarten moved. Then, they ran at the ever widening entrance and themselves into total, gut wrenching, shadowy darkness.
