Okay maybe this wasn't the best of ideas that he had. Gabriel's muscles ached as he hefted up his shield to take the brunt of the blow. His shoulder shuddered as the blow reverberated up and down his arm. The whole sword and shield thing, that wasn't his strong point. But he had to be strong, he had to be able to do things just like the other legionnaires. His skills with his knives were strong and his skill at archery was even stronger, but this was something that he would need in the times to come. Gabriel knew that the strange times were looming on the horizon and there was little that anyone could do to stem the storm that was to come. His father hinted at it and even his sister, who was crazier than usual, was doing stuff that was even too strange for her. His skills as an archer had allowed him keen eyes that noticed much of what was going on. He noticed changing details that others didn't. Gabriel did notice that people were on edge, paranoid even. He knew what the last war was like and he didn't like it. He knew of pain and loss that had accompanied the battle. He lost one or two friends that he had, but it wasn't like he had enough friends that he could afford to loose them so willy nilly. There weren't many people that would befriend a child of Pluto. They were rather few and far between so Gabriel treasured the ones that he did have. It was his right arm that was now shaking as he held his sword. He was left handed but most of the stuff was for right-handed folk. He had a generic gladius that he had gotten from the armory, but he would need something better suited to him.
Gabriel ducked a horizontal blow that would have taken his head off if these wern't practice swords. Blunt as they maybe, any hit to the neck from something like that might have crushed his windpipe. He would need another set of leather armor too, this practice armor was hard to move in, too stiff as if it hadn't been oiled properly. Well it was general leather practice armor and they wern't as well taken care of here than they were back in the armory. The younger legionaries cared more for the armor as they were taught by their centurions to take care of their things. Even to this day, Gabriel diligently made sure his arms and armor were well taken care of. It had been driven into his mind like a jack hammer. He knew what could happen if you didn't take care of your armor and you needed it. Swords in disrepair could break or not cut, battle didn't allow for such mistakes like this. Gabriel was sure to keep his long and curved knives sharp and at the ready. His bow was always well cared for as were his arrows. However as much as he loved the elven recurve bow his mother had gotten him, he wanted something that was like one of his favored comic book characters. A collapsable bow that could be extended and shot just like any normal bow. It would be easier to keep on him as a back up bow on him as well as the melee weapons he needed, that's why he needed his armor to be so light, his weapons were heavy and he didn't need to be dragged down by extra un-needed weight.
Gabriel slammed his shield into his opponant's midsection as he feinted and made a slash attempt with his sword. The guy easily dodged it, or was it a girl, he wasn't sure, everyone looked the same under all the same armor. A whistle blew and the pairs of sparring soldiers broke. Gabriel nodded at his opponent before he took his helmet off and let the cool air blow through his hair. He saw his opponent do the same but he wasn't much paying attention. He rolled his shoulder in a circle as he dropped the shield into the sand of the arena floor. His right side was much weaker than his left, after that attack of the monsters last battle, he wasn't able to use it the same way as he used to. His muscles were tighter, much stiffer and not as spry as they used to be. He'd still have to practice and practice to get it back to even the same bit of skill as he used to, but for now he used it as his off hand. Gabriel sat down in the sand and proceeded to drink down a gallon of water he had brought with him. It felt good when the liquid slid down his throat. He was quite parched. “What a day....” He said as he leaned his head back, his body aching.
