Oof! Marie dropped to the ground as her cohort went their separate ways after training. It was fifth cohort, so there wasn’t really a lot to training. That and they were all so sick with worry about their missing brand new centurion, Josh. Ronan still drove them hard, trying to improve them, but they all knew they were a far cry from first and second. FAR CRY. Marie took a deep breath as she sprawled out on her back in the grass and closed her eyes against the sun. It was warm out, but at least it was humid. Ugh! She reached an arm up and wiped the sweat from her face. After a minute, she lifted her gladius from her side and held it up so the sunlight gleamed off the edge. She frowned, licked her finger, and wiped a smudge of dirt from the shiny surface. “There, much better,” she said to no one. “Can’t have you looking unpresentable.” She paused and frowned. “Unpresentable. Is that a word? It sounds funny. Well, well, it’s a word now. I’ll just have to call Webster later and inform them.”
She let her gladius fall back to her side. Well, not literally fall – she wasn’t a clutz about a sharp weapon – but more of a controlled… lowering. Yes, that was the word. She took a deep breath and stared at the clouds for a long moment. A glance at her watch told her it was ten til noon. Everyone else would be out getting ready for lunch, in the showers, gathering with their friends. Her stomach rumbled slightly, reminding her that she should be with them. But she wasn’t. It felt nice to just lay out here, all on her own as far as she could tell. Everyone in their right mind would be grabbing a bite to eat. Why wasn’t she again? Hmm… she’s ponder that and get back with herself.
Oh, the mind of Marie Winters. It was a strange place, but it was familiar trail to her. Given that the trail always changed and branched off every few feet. She often found herself with one foot on one trail and the other on a completely different trail. It was a not-so-endearing quality that had earned her not so many friends over the years, but she was thankful for the ones she had. Plus being so… mentally all over the place meant she could see situations from perspectives people didn’t always see… or want to see. Take Felicity Weingarten – rest her soul – for one. That girl had played both sides like a skilled fiddl-ist (?) before the war. Marie tried to keep up with what she was up to, but especially that half year absence made it hard. Then the whole memory wipe thing. And the fact that she had never actually met Felicity Weingarten. Hmm, details.
