Tessa sat in the spot that Gunnar first took her away on their first date. Surely she had learned to not hang out alone too much anymore, and Gunnar had been so worried about the man she saw in the armory. Recently she had been going about her day, training and infirmary work normally. Then instead of wandering off on her own to do something, she'd go home with Gunnar. Normally she spent evenings practicing in the fields of Mars, the archery fields, somewhere generally alone. She sometimes would feel uncomfortable, like someone might attack her. Though she used to strive off those kinds of thoughts as selfishness. Now she was a centurion, and the head of the infirmary. No longer could she say her life wasn't worth an attack of some kind. Still she wanted to prove to herself she wasn't afraid, that she was brave. In that way she would go out at night, go out alone, as long as she had her weapons on her. It wasn't Roman to be afraid of what could go bump in the night, right?
Now she wanted to prove even more how good of a Roman she was. She had seen her father several times in town now, the first time was heart breaking. He told her to just stop talking to him. To leave him alone. Perhaps not his exact words, but she knew what he meant. He didn't want her. Nothing she could do would. Lilith liked her, right? Gunnar liked her, right? The legion wanted her, right? She just had to leave it be, and move on. Leave her daddy behind. Her silky red hair covered her face, blocking her view of the little cherub she was sewing together. How was she supposed to move on from someone she lived her entire life for?
A cold wind blew through the trees, and darkness was starting to fall over Camp Jupiter. Something told her she should call for Gunnar, to go home where it was warm. In more ways than one. Where she could get a hug, and feel like everything was alright. Here at the edge of the forest, a winter chill in the air and the sun falling into sleep. Reds and purples covered the sky, partially visible through the trees. Her eyes stared mesmerized into the wide open air above her.
