Dinner For Two (Pluto)

She really didn’t have any particular reason for doing this at this time, except that she loved her husband dearly and wanted to surprise him. And, well, wasn’t that reason enough? She liked to think it was. She got an oven mit on and opened the oven door. Heat washed over her. It was a little stifling, and would be unwelcome if it didn’t carry with it that smell. She’d dug out a recipe from the times of the Empire for the juiciest, most tender lamb and had been at work on it half the day. She wanted this to be special, just for him. For them. The ghostly chef that usually did the cooking was enjoying a day off after he’d taken care of breakfast this morning. It was her turn in the kitchen. Ah, and the salad to go with the lamb. She had to make sure that was mixed well, with the dressing she’d made herself that was cooking on the stove. She pulled the lamb out of the oven and set it on the counter on the two wooden holders that would protect the counter, turned off the oven and stove, and smiled. It looked wonderful and smelled even better. She hoped he would like it.

She let the lamb cool a bit as she poured the dressing into the salad bowl and mixed it with her hands, working the dressing into all the nooks and crannies. It made a bit of a mess of her hands, but ah well, worth it. Once that was ready, she washed her hands off. Taking off the apron she’d been wearing and hanging it up, she carried the lamb first and the salad second into the dining hall and set them on the table. She’d already set the plates and utensils out while the lamb was cooking. She set out the candle stand and the tall candles it held. With a match, she let the three candles, then stood back to admire everything. A ghostly guard stood at attention a little ways off near the doors. She turned her attention to him. “Matthew, please go get Lord Pluto. Tell him I have something for him.” The ghost left the room and she set back to work making sure everything was perfect.

The god of the Underworld had been mussing over reports of the percentage of souls inflow. It seemed like the fields of punishment would need an extension now that there seemed to be another war happening in the Middle East. Something about Jordan finally exacting revenge of some extremist militant group. Pluto had heard of them, they had sent some great souls down here, unfortunately. Those people deserved to have lived longer. But alas, mortals had a strange way of dealing with issues and some resorted to extreme violence. Still, Pluto made a note to construct more space. It's not like he didn't have enough space to expand, he had all the space he needed so it was really no big deal. The Underworld was vast and never ending with its own little attractions.

As Pluto leaned back in his black leather chair he caught a smell of something cooking in the kitchen. He enjoyed the ventilation system from the kitchen hitting his office. He really needed to congratulate the chef today. Whatever he was working on was bring back marvelous memories of the golden age of Rome. Pluto couldn't help but smile some as he remembered the fear he invoked back then. People were afraid to even utter his name in fear of him striking them down to add to his collection. Those were the days. Though in all reality, he wouldn't actually do that. While he enjoyed the thought of him being so terrifying he really wasn't. Not once you got to know him. His beloved wife could tell you that.

Sure, it took some time for her to warm up to him. And he wasn't the best in dealing with social stuff but gods, he was obsessed with her and just couldn't do his job right because thoughts of her would always enter his head. So after kidnapping and marrying her, with Jupiters approval mind you, he was a bit depressed that she didn't swoon for him. Alas, she did see the softer side to him and they grew to have a healthy relationship. Sure, they had their share of demigods but they didn't have multiple like some other immortals. And whenever Pluto ended up having another child he made sure to treat Proserpina and beg for her forgiveness. He also worried about his children too, worried that one day she'll just get so mad at him and act how Juno acts to Jupiters demigod children. So far, that hadn't happened for which Pluto was happy of and reminded him just how lucky he was to have such a brilliant wife.

Plutos thoughts were interrupted when one of his ghostly guards, Micheal was his name, told him that the woman he had been thinking about had something for him in the kitchens. The kitchen did prompt an eyebrow raise but Pluto thanked the guard and headed toward the kitchen, enjoying the warm scent of the cooking food. He entered the kitchen to be greeted by the appearance of his lovely wife. He smiled. " Tell me, my darling, are you the cause for this delicious food and lovely set up?

This place held a lot of memories. Albeit some of them not the best. She remembered her first time here, when she’d gotten married to a man she’d never met after being abducted. She’d gotten a room to herself, thankfully, and never left it. The pillow was usually soaked with tears and hugged until it was flat. The window in that room hadn’t offered a reassuring view either. Sure, for the Underworld, it was nice. But it was the Underworld. She was the goddess of youth and Springtime, so the Underworld was way out of her comfort zone. And that horrible sinking feeling that she would never again see the light of day. She’d been an emotional mess. She hardly slept and she certainly didn’t eat. She learned later about how it had gotten to Pluto so much that he went to her parents and set up a nice little time-sharing system for her. Well, nice in a manner of speaking. She had no say in it, but it did allow her to return home… temporarily. She’d been elated to get back home. Though leaving Olympus had a whole new meaning after her abduction. She tended to prefer to keep close to her mother, which seemed fine in Ceres’ book. When it came time for her to go back, she and Ceres teamed up against Jupiter in the do-I-have-to debate. But before long, she found herself back in her room in the Underworld. She spent roughly a month in there this time, give or take, before it happened.

She’d been having these nightmares for a week at least when she finally gave in. Nightmares of Saturn. Him destroying Olympus, killing her mother and all the other gods and goddesses, and hunting her down. He always caught her, making her wake with a start in a cold sweat. Finally, she gave in to the fact that being alone was horrible, so one night she snuck to Pluto’s room and dared to knock. He had been reading at the time, though he had put it aside when he saw the fear in her eyes. Whether that fear was from Saturn or him, she still wasn’t sure. Probably a healthy mix. But she’d talked with him and ended up staying the night with him that night. And the next. And the next. Eventually it became normal. And that time the next year, she found herself wanting to be around him for him, not for security. She couldn’t pin down the exact time, or even the year, but eventually, she fell for him. And now here they were. Centuries together happily, and she found she looked forward not only to her time on Olympus, but her time with him here.

Which brought her to where she was now. The time she left for Olympus was drawing near and she was finding herself… a little sad. She loved her husband dearly (and her mom was a tad annoying on the flip side) so leaving here was always sad. Bittersweet really. Still. All the same, she was determined to enjoy her time with him now. Which was why she’d decided to throw this little surprise for him. She placed her hands on the top of the back of Pluto’s chair at the table, standing behind it, waiting for him. When he came in, she couldn’t help but smile. He was so handsome. She’d met Adonis and that man was a push-over, mostly because he flaunted himself like all the time. And he was supposed to be all that and a bag of chips. No, it was Pluto. He had this dignified grace about him, defined features, eyes that could melt her heart, everything. He was perfect. She wanted to just hurry to his side and hold him close, but she stayed where she was. “I thought I’d surprise you. So then… did it work?”
