Avetis sat on the edge of the fountain in the middle of the forum. This place, New Rome, his new home. It felt so wrong. So strange. He fiddled with the wrapper from the hot dog that had been his lunch. So… not him. He hated it here. There were really only one or two people keeping him here, to be honest. He would run free if it weren’t for them. Leave this place never to return. This place had never done him justice. What was to change that now. Sure, he wasn’t dead as punishment for his involvement in the recent events, but he wasn’t exactly welcomed either. He was the one people avoided. Didn’t help that he stood out in a crowd, with his eye patch and refusal to change from his old wardrobe almost entirely. He still favored his old faithful black trench coat. Not exactly normal around here. Back in the office and on the military base, it more like was.
He looked around as a group of kids passed with their wooden swords, seeing as everyone, no matter the age, was trained to fight here. One of them saw him and pulled his friends in the opposite direction a little too hurriedly. Word travelled fast, didn’t it? Word like ‘avoid that man or he might kill you.’ He wasn’t actually the killing type, not anymore. During his Roman legionnaire days, he didn’t hesitate to send people to the infirmary. These days… well, he had people to protect, and part of that was keeping his own slate clean. He was walking free, a citizen, and he couldn’t betray their trust, even if that was the only thing they gave him. He’d come so far in the government. Where he’d finally been respected. Now? Heck, he hardly even saw his own daughter so gods only knew what he even had anymore. No respect, not really any family, the woman he’d hidden his feelings for was long dead. All he had was a tiny apartment, a dead end job, and a smidge of trust on the part of the Senate else he’d be in Audrey’s position right now.
