Orcus was not in his best moment ever. He’d been this way for some time. Ever since he lost her again. Click, click, said his cane. He sighed. He glanced over at the coffee shop where he’d first met her. She’d remember that. That was Felicity. She probably remembered everything up until the Phlegathon, but he was too nervous to ask. He hadn’t been there when she forgot… well, him. He’d left that one to her fiancé. He wasn’t going to interfere again. She’d chosen the other. Click, click.
He dug in his pocket where there was a sort of pocket watch attached to his belt by a thin Imperial gold chain. He checked the time. Round abouts 2 pm. He shifted the angle of the watch to look at the inside of the lid, where he’d arranged a small painting on papyrus (Egyptian, yes, but it was good stuff) that he’d had Trivia enchant to preserve all those thousands of years ago. It showed him, Laverna, and Atilius, they’re little boy, back when Atilius was a mere twenty years old, even if he still looked twelve. Laverna smiled back at him, the then-Orcus’ gold-skinned arm draped around her shoulders, the other hand on their son’s shoulder. Happy little family. He closed the pocket watch and gently put it back in his pocket. “I’ll find you again. Next time we’ll be together. I promise I’ll find you.” His words were quiet, but sure. He would get his happy ending. Click, click, his cane agreed.
Finally! Their plan was going to come into fruition soon! That was all they needed for their plan to finally be complete and then they would win. After what they did to the base they were going to pay for it. She couldn’t help but smirk as she was coming back from some training in the camp. They really were great infiltrators. She couldn’t help but enjoy what was going on here. Not only that but she had one of these people under her spell. Love magic, it was amazing when used as a weapon. She was able to make someone do whatever she wanted when she broke him or her to her will. She’d done it so many times it was like taking a walk in the park. What had she been doing now? Having fun in hand to hand training against all these newbies. They had no idea how to fight and she took out all of her partners with ease.
She had returned back to their base and showered and changed before heading into New Rome. Sure she had to leave her weapons behind but what they didn’t know was that she was a weapon. But, she wasn’t there to cause chaos right now. She was going to head in there to have fun and scout out. While here she should probably pick something up for Rex but that would mean. No, she was not going to let her mission become anymore than just a mission.
While walking her eyes landed on an old man with a can. click, click. How could people not get annoyed like that? It reminded her of back in the lab, there was an old doctor who always checked on her and made sure that she was healthy. He was a nice guy but this guy, something about him spelled trouble. Something about him seemed familiar though. So yes, she was going to follow the creepy guy with the cane. When he spoke she barley heard what he said but being trained by the government she was trained to listen. A smirk on her lips as she walked closer to him and kept pace. “You know, it’s come to my experience when someone doesn’t want to be found they try and stay that way. Now the question is if they left any clues for you to find as to where they went.” Oh yes, now she was feeling mischievous.
Orcus was in no mood for games, which apparently was exactly what was on the mind of this purple little girl. Seriously, what was her deal? Who had people hair outside of Japan? Maybe that was it. She was an anime wannabe. Apparently, the oddballs even came in Roman. Great. “Oh yes, because I’ve always wanted to have a heart to heart with a Sailor Scout.” Click, click. That was the last female-heroine based show he could think of. Odd place all in all. She looked like she could pass for high school too, which was about right for those shows. He sighed. ‘It has come to my attention that when someone doesn’t want to be found, I’m pretty good at finding them. Usually by the stench of their guilt and sin. Like neon lights. Promises are dangerous. Swears, worse so. Thus I work toward promising only when I truly mean it and outright avoiding swears. Humans are different though. Give me a job.”
“One thing you should know, Lady Purple, is that I am a god and I do not need crumbs of bread to find things or people. My senses are greater than yours. What I need is patience and patience I have. I will watch until it is my time to move. And you may see my cane and think me incapable to move all that well, but I assure you, move I shall. It’s similar to how I see your questionable fashion and wonder if your head is comprised of the cotton candy that appears to flow from it. Or if you are simply seeking attention.” This little whelp somewhat reminded him of Melinoe. He’d avoided talking to her as often as he could, moody teen though she was, because she wanted attention and power and, well, these days he saw her more than her own parents. Growing up, she’d made rash decisions to support causes and being as dramatic as both her parents combined and still foolish in youth, she pledged things to others that she never fulfilled. They learned and they made her pledge on high stakes. Now Orcus was in the picture. It wasn’t pretty. “My business is my own and you should feel ashamed for your rudeness. Consider yourself a pop-psychologist, do you? Well, it won’t work.” Click, click.
There was something strange about this guy; like he was up to something and he didn’t want anyone to find out what it was. Maybe she should stay clear of him for fear of him turning that cane on her. No, she was a weapon for the government and she had no reason to fear this crippled old man. She could destroy him with a flick of her wrist and not need to worry about hurting him. That was all these people here were. They were her toys and she would make sure that they knew that in the end. When he called her a sailor scout she couldn’t help but smile. That was the one show she watched when she was allowed to watch TV. “Well I do make a good Sailor Saturn or should I go after my mother and be Sailor Venus?” Venus always was her favorite but Saturn was able to destroy.
Hearing him about finding things and being pretty good at being able to find things that didn’t want to be found made her smile. So this guy really must be good at his job. “So you must be related to the hunter god?” There had to be some minor god of the hunt. That would explain how he got his awesomeness at finding people. Wait, what did he mean stench of guilt and all that crazy stuff? What was up with this guy?
When he spoke about being a god she put her hands up and slowly backed away. She knew when she was out gunned and him being a god took the cake. Ouch, was all this guy could offer was insults to her? No wonder people hated the gods. They were arrogant and jerks! Now she wondered if her mother was like this too. If she was it was a good thing that she was never here at the camp or she would have sided with the Titans. “Okay, all I was doing was offering advice. If you didn’t want to talk you could have asked me to go away. Not stand there and insulting me.” She pouted as she backed up more. Okay her feelings really weren’t hurt because you had to have feelings to hurt in the first place.
“Actually I consider myself someone who is learning things about the world and the way it works. I don’t assume to know all or anything I just try to help.” Sigh, she was going to get nowhere with this dude fast. Whichever god he was she needed to just back away and find someone who was easier prey. Someone she could manipulate and use to her whim. Someone who could help her destroy the barrier that protected this place. Then the camp and city would fall and there would be no more camp here. Her enemies would be destroyed and then her and her friends would have justice.
He had to roll his eyes at the Sailor Saturn comment. He didn’t know enough of the show to remember which was the stupidest, but it was probably the one that this girl should play. Maybe the blond pigtails girl who always flubbed things. Oh gods, not Venus. “Come now, Venus would never dress like that. Bows are so 1990s. Though what do I know?” He glanced sideways at her at the hunter god comment. “I invented hunting.” It wasn’t true totally, but he did invent his particular form of hunting. One that didn’t need a weapon.
When she put her hands up and backed away, though, he realized he’d gotten a little too mean there. He stopped walking and sighed as he listened to her words silently. Eventually, when she was finished, he nodded. “My apologies. I was too quick to anger. Things have been trying lately is my only excuse. Let’s try this again, shall we?” He turned to her and extended a hand. “My name is Orcus, Underworld god and punisher of broken oaths. And you are Melody Rhodes, daughter of Venus, who has sworn herself to destroying this place and all who live here. Don’t worry, that’s all I know. I’m not omniscient. I just know when people promise anything or swear on anything. Consider it… invoking my presence. I won’t tell anyone though. So then… simply here to scout the territory, or considering breaking your promise?”
Words: 241 Tag: @melody Notes: Short and hope you don’t mind the promise thing. I figure those four probably discussed it before coming to the camp.
