Remus took off work earlier than normal today. He was under a lot of pressure, internally and externally, and he needed some time to breathe. So he headed back to his and Felicity’s place and let himself in. “Felicity? It’s me!” He walked in a bit further and looked around. “Felicity?” Well, he suspected he couldn’t expect her to know he’d be home early. So he went to the kitchen and put some water on the stove to heat. They had a Keurig, but he was in the mood for true blue tea that was brought to a boil with the tea bags already in it. Peppermint was the choice for today, and just to try to stay a bit healthier, he put honey in the water instead of sugar along with a few tea bags. Then he contented himself with looking out the window as it came to a boil.
The sound of bubbling brought him back and he stirred it and turned the heat down to let it simmer and steep. Meanwhile, he got in the cabinet and fished out his favorite mug. He said the word mug loosely. It had been a gag gift from Jason, who usually found it funny how addicted to tea Remus was, so he bought him a soup bowl with a handle on it and said it was a ‘Remus Sized Mug’. He held the mug fondly, remember the hearty laugh he and Jason had had over it. And how a couple days later Remus had bought a 2-liter from the corner store, drained it in the sink (wasn’t much into soda) and cut to rounded top off and gave it to Jason with the excuse that it was for his morning coffee. Obviously, Jason could never use his 7-up coffee mug as thin plastic was the absolute last thing you wanted holding a hot beverage, but Remus used the heck out of his mug, and Jason usually got a laugh whenever he saw it on his desk. At first, he’d teased him for it, then he moved on to jokingly offering to top him off. All in all, it was always funny.
And it would never happen again.
The thought came clear out of the blue and it was crippling. From a simple mug came crashing in the realization that his best friend was dead. He held the mug close to him to keep from breaking it and because he needed something to hold as he dropped to his knees and the tears came right there in the middle of the kitchen with the smell of peppermint softening the air. This was the first time he’d let himself cry since Felicity showed up in his bedroom with Jason’s dead body and it was all coming out.
