It was a beautiful Spring day in Camp Jupiter and New Rome, people were outside buying stuff, playing with friends, hanging out, it was a busy day. Megan promised her son, Sammy, to bake an apple pie in the afternoon after his training with Charlie and Chris. It was really good that some centurions took the time to train the new generations before they had to go through Lupa’s test. She was so proud of her son, he the best of his godly relatives and his human genes too. He was gentle and responsible, her little hero and her reason to be.
She walked down the street, looking around, checking the produce of each farm in their respective stands. She wanted some good yellow apples, they were much better, juicier and sweeter than the red ones. She checked the apples of Mrs Jones. She always had good ones, but that day they weren’t that nice, seemed rotten. Mrs.Jones told her that it had been the owner’s fault. The old woman insulted Ceres right before the harvest of apples, so she lost the harvest. Meg apologized to the old woman because she usually bought her fruits to that woman, and continued looking for the apples among the other stands.
Suddenly she got to a nice stand, fruits seemed to be fresh and healthy. She took an apple and observed it she wanted perfect ones and she had never bought fruits from that stand. “Excuse me…” she said so she could ask a question to the clerk.
Jack always had the fruit just perfectly arranged, mostly he did the best sort of thing to the infirmary and Terry's shop. But today he had a bunch of excess stock that he was taking down to his stall in the market. He usually employed a bunch of the younger kids that wanted to earn some extra money. Jack had a bunch of good apples, all colors and all sorts of varieties. His personal favorite ones were the pink lady apples. They were small and petite, a pinkish red with green flecks. They were juicy and very good for snacking, not good for baking at all. The baking apples that he had worked on to stand up the the heat of the oven they were on the other side. The Granny smith and green skinned apples. He had a whole ton of other produce. Some were fruits and vegetables, mostly root vegetables. Plenty of good stuff to eat. But unlike a good deal of his siblings, he wasn't strictly a vegetarian. Jack knew the benefits of having good meat in a dish. He did have a large army of vegetarian meals at his disposal, he was more apt to include fish and other meats.
One of his kids were tending the stall as he brought in another crate of produce. This time it was ears of corn. They were beautifully colored, bright and vibrant and healthy. He gave his mom a small thanks, knowing that she wasn't listening. At least not to him. He didn't compare to his half sister so what was he even thinking trying to wonder and hoping to catch her eye? It was a stupid thought. A new customer, someone asking his employee a question. "Woah bud, what are the rules?" He asked, reminding the poor kid about what his thing was. "I get to talk to the hot girls, you talk to everyone else." He said in a joking manner. "Can I interest you in a grapple? Looks and feels like an apple, taste like a grape." He said as he pulled one from the top pile. He smiled at the beautiful woman.
Meg waited patiently for someone who answered her questions. she looked at the teen that walked closer to her. He was a couple of years older than her Sammy, maybe in the future she would suggest him to do that, have a part time job. Maybe not in the fruit and vegetable business, although she knew that Sammy's grandmother was Ceres, she wasn't sure he would like that job or maybe he would, but she still had a couple of years before that had to be decided. Meanwhile she would buy the apples and bake her son a magnificent apple pie.
She was still holding the yellow apple when before she could ask the kid her question, an older guy walked closer too and told the kid what it seemed a joke... or maybe it wasn't such. Meg smiled at the teen... "Thank you." She thanked him, anyways he was willing to help her, right? then she looked at the older guy, something in his voice tingled her mind as any other could have done it. but the moment the guy faced her and offered a grappaple, she knew who he was. "Jack..." she thought and half smiled, she wondered how long he would delay in finding out who she was, she even wondered if he would really remember her.
"uhm... not reall, at least not by the moment. I want to bake a delicious apple pie, a traditional one, and I don't think the grappaples would make the trick." She said and then smiled a bit more. "I rather use some good yellow apples, jucier than the red ones." She said and then showed him the yellow one she had in her hand. "or do you have any other suggestion for a pie? Kind sir?" she said and smiled a bit more, in fact she just remembered that the first thing she ever baked was an apple pie, and it had been for his birthday, while they were couple.
Jack couldn't help but crack a smile as he watched the kid he had working for him right now seemingly elbowed him in the side with a laugh. It was great that some of the kids that worked with him had such a great sense of humor. He wasn't exactly the sort of guy that you couldn't have one around. Jack was the sort of person to pick and cut up around you. It was all in good fun, but if you ever just felt like it was over the top, all you had to do was say so and he'd stop. It was his own way of showing someone that he cared. He loved all his kids that worked with him, but this one in particular he was overly fond of. "I got this kiddo, why don't you help Mr. Akihiko with his leeks." He said as he nudged the kid in the direction of the old Asian man who was picking up some food.
"A pie huh?" There was that twinkle in his eye, but he tilted his head to the side as he felt that familiar tone of her voice. It was warm, peaceful, feeling like he had just taken a relaxing day in the spa. "Well if you're going to make a pie, I'd recommend these ones here." Jack said as he picked up one of the bright green apples. "The granny smith apples are perfect for baking, Their tartness if you sprinkle them with lemon juice and cinnamon works well together." He said with a knowing look. He did make his own pie after all. "You remind me of someone i know. You have the most beautiful smile." He said with a tilt of his head and a half grin. His signature half grin that sent many of the girls in his cohort swooning back in the day. "Is that my dear Megan I see?" Jack said with a cheesy grin as something clicked in his mind. This was Megan, the best night of his life, sweapt him off his feet, the only one he cared about more than his bees. If she just asked him to stay, he really would have stayed.

Meg looked at Jack’s hand when he showed her the green ones, he still had the firm and strong hands she had always loved, but he had changed, he was stronger, not only physically but also inside, she could see it in his eyes, she had known Jack when he had been a child, then a teen, and a young adult, in each of those stages she thought that he was in his best moment, but in that moment, looking at him, she realized how dumb she had been back then, she knew he, as his produce, got better within time.
“Then I think I should take enough apples for the pie, give me 10 apples please.” She smiled at him and then he said she reminded him of someone he knew and made that stupid half smile that she had adored so much, but also more than half of the legion! Still, the smile achieved its mission, she blushed like a school girl, she breathed deeply and tried to regain control over her own mind and body. “Oh yeah? Who could it be?” she asked going on with the game. But then his words broke almost all of her walls, he had recognized her, which made her blush again and smile even more.
“In the flesh.” She said and nodded at him. “It is nice to see you Jack, I see you did all of what you said you’d do. Congratulations.” She grinned at him because her words were earnest, she was really happy to him. So happy that for a single second she forgot a little detail that he should have to know… or he shouldn’t. She remembered that single detail and she breathed deeply and her smile changed a bit, it was hiding the fact that Nate would be waiting for her at home soon.
