Kaylee had finished her training for the day and Nick was spending time with one of his old life friends. It was nice that he could still do that, and she wanted to give him plenty of time to be with friends he used to have in his living days here. Barrackmates and training partners, that sort. Kaylee had always been the odd one out. Her mother was faded by the time she came to the Legion, so here she was, a memory of the last child of the goddess of memory. She had visited the graveyard earlier and spruced up Nick’s grave as a present for him. Polished the stone and trimmed the grass so everything looked tidy. Hers was right next to his, something that might have been sad for anyone else, but the fact that they were not 100% gone made it all the better.
Now here she was, in New Rome. She spent a little time wandering the streets before making her way to the fountain that dominated the main part of the forum. She remembered all the times she used to schedule meetings with Nick here when they were both still living Legionnaires. Here or Temple Hill. It was probably about one, so the businessmen and women were back to their jobs and the Legionnaires were off their lunch break, so if they had training, they were there, and if they did not, then Olympus only knew where they were. Though she did spot one of them. Little Catherine. The nine-year-old legacy of Mercury had been sent to Kaylee by her parents early to help her cope with what being in the Legion would be like instead of her cozy little school where she was apparently already taking after her divine grandfather. Kaylee was happy to help her get ready as a favor to her parents. Today was summer holiday, so she was clinging to her mother’s hand as they walked around. Catherine had an affinity for boyish things, so the girl never wore a dress or pink. Currently she was in shorts and a Mickey Mouse t-shirt as she clung to her mother’s hand. Her mother was obviously shopping based on the bags dangling from her elbow and the cup of drink in her hand. Catherine had a lemonade with a bendy straw from the nearby stand. When she saw her mentor sitting on the edge of the fountain, Catherine almost spilled her sugary drink in order to wave energetically. Kaylee broke out in a big smile and waved back, shooting a little finger gun at her, which was their little inside joke. Catherine tried to shoot back, but was inhibited by the bright green cup, so it looked more like she was wrong-finger toasting with tea the proper British style. Kaylee laughed. She watched as the crowds swallowed the little girl and her mother’s retreating backs, and smiled.
