Ava had turned down a side street away from the main road that was in New Rome. It was away from some of the major shops and merchants that tended to make their money in stalls or open aired shops. Not that Ava really had anything against that, but she was looking for something in particular. Not to mention the side streets were fun. There was always some little cafe or shop, and to be honest, the hole in the wall places were always the best in her opinion. Even back home she always liked the out of the way shops that had been run by the same families for generations. They had the best foods and the best items for sale. Right now she was looking for something in particular. She needed to restock some of the herbs that she kept on hand for brewing in tea. But the last time she had gone on the little adventure of hers, she had found a tea shop that was owned by a little old couple, the woman a Chinese native who was a daughter of Trivia. Fitting that she should own a tea shop. There was the tinkling sound of the bell as she pushed open the wooden door, one who didn't like the smell of tea would have a deep aversion to the scent. Not her. She inhaled deeply, taking in the smell of musk and earth and herbs. Though she could swear that there was a slight scent of guano in the air, but even if it made her own nose wrinkle, the scent of jasmine and dried ginger was much more over powering than that slight tinge of bat guano. The older lady clucked at her like a mother hen, tutting about and remarking that young people had hardly the time to stop and savor a cup of tea these days. Ava purchased a few blends of tea, she had her own bags that one could seep tea in, before bowing and moving on to the shaded side street.
The air outside was different. It smelled sweeter after being in a dusty shop. Though she couldn't help but sneeze slightly. She had her purchases in a brown paper bag with the top rolled down as she then turned on her heel, moving in a more north direction, following the side street parallel to the main street before taking a left a few blocks down. It was a quiet midafternoon. For the most part. Ava could hear the sound of small children laughing and playing at a playground in a fenced in area. A large willow tree along with a few oaks and maples had provided much shade. Off on the side of the playground, Ava spotted two legionnaires sitting in the swings, kicking their legs back and forth while making a grand attempt at holding hands. The sight made her smile. It was always nice to see two people together, even if it was just a brief teenage romance. She was just barely out of her teens, celebrating her twentieth birthday a few months back. Her friends had taken her on a picnic by the lake, there were just two or three of them sitting there, sipping tea and eating sandwiches and having a bit of cake that they had purchased from a near by bakery. Ava stopped and purchased some fruit and a drink from another vendor. A little picnic by herself wasn't a bad idea. She had a little bit of time before she had to return from the afternoon session of training.
The tea she bought was cold, refreshing. Though in her own true fashion, she had gotten it with peach juice to help sweeten it up. Beside her were a couple of apples and bananas and a few rather ripe smelling peaches. Peaches were some of her favorite fruits in the whole world, after that came raspberries. Then strawberry's. Aww who was she kidding, she loved fruit. Vegetables were a much different story. She unlatched the gate before wandering over to the bench that was under the willow branches. She gently sat down, sipping on her cold tea before turning her attention to the children (and some legionnaires) at play. She watched as a game of cowboys and indians of sorts broke out, though the children were calling it romans and titans, but it was the same gist. Another group had broken off and started their very own game of tag. She couldn't help but smile as she watched, sipping and pulling out one of the peaches to sink her teeth into.
