Proserpina might be the goddess of Spring, but she rather enjoyed Autumn too. Mostly because Autumn signified her return to her dear husband, Pluto. She had roughly thirty minutes before the equinox began and she was in her chambers on Olympus making sure she looked perfect for the reunion as her mother stood behind her before the mirror clammering. “Won’t you just think about staying another week? It’s not like it even feels like Autumn anywhere yet!” her mother went on. Proserpina had no doubt this continued hot weather across the country was nothing more than a bribe her mother had done with the Winds. She did this almost every year. And this year she seemed to be putting extra effort into it. It was like she suddenly realized that she was going to be a grandmother this winter and that was important. She’d been iffy about the whole thing all this time, but now that her daughter was actually leaving, it seemed to hit.
“Now, mother, we can’t upset the balance. It’s Autumn no matter what the weather does. It is the Equinox.” She kept her eyes on her hair as she pinned a lily comb into her meticulously curled and styled hair, but she definitely heard Ceres’ loud sigh and muttering. She decided to leave it alone though. She was wearing a deep blue chiton with gold trim, which looked odd here in the bright and vibrant Mount Olympus. These were things only the Underworld gods wore. Which was exactly why she was wearing it. And the sight of her in it instead of her usual pastels seemed to make her mother freak out. Proserpina continued at her prep work, tuning out every plea from Ceres, even when they became demands and even a couple threats. Not against Proserpina, as Ceres could never bring herself to do that, but every other immortal remotely involved in the seasons seemed to be in some sort of danger from the maniacal harvest goddess.
She was pretty sure her mother was in the middle of a sentence, but she didn’t let that stop her as she spin around and, as if this was all perfectly agreed upon by the two, gave her mom a quick kiss on the cheek. “Time to go. Can’t be late. Give my regards to Lord Jupiter.” She never called that one father seeing as he never paid her much attention, always favoring the twins if he had to favor anyone. Usually he just did what he pleased and that was that. She took no offense to it anymore. Meanwhile Ceres let out the most trying-to-be-heart-wrenching sigh. “I will.” Proserpina pulled her into a quick hug, then pulled away just enough to leave in a swirl of flowers.
The flowers dispersed in a small field far away from Olympus. Though the seat of power no longer resided here, she liked to use this field as the meeting place. It was the place where Pluto had initially taken her from the sunlit lands and it was the place she went to every year to return to the Underworld. Now all she had to do was wait. As usual, she was early.
