Clare unlocked the door of her former residence in New Rome. There was currently a for sale sign in the yard, but she wanted to check in on it. She’d Iris Messaged Ethan Hunter to get her here in exchange for her famous sweet potato casserole. Yes, the one with the marshmallows on top. Christina was back in Sicily with the nyads as she came here. She opened the windows of the house to get some nice warm spring air inside and put a pot of water on the stove. An old trick she learned a long time ago that she wished she could use in Sicily, but there really was no use for it. She opened the plastic bag of fresh lavender leaves she’d picked from the community garden and dropped them into the pot the minute it came to a gentle boil. She let that go for about five minutes before turning it to a simmer.
She walked around the house, busying herself with whatever she could find. The ring on her finger seemed attracted – understandably – to every stray beam of light that hit it, lighting up with a dazzling glimmer. Pretty soon the house smelled like lavender. It was scrumptious.
Windows open, lavender percolating, she grabbed her book and headed to the front garden. Setting her book to the side, she did a little garden grooming. It felt good to get her hands dirty again. She didn’t do it nearly enough anymore, though she fully intended to teach Christina the ins and outs of gardening as soon as possible. It was a joy to help things grow and she wanted her daughter to know that. Besides, the products were wonderful! Flowers that smelled just as good as they looked, vegetables that helped the body and tasted wonderful when cooked right. Which was the other thing that Clare was going to teach her. Yes, Christina would be a Renaissance woman just like her mother.
