Marie sat on the beach of the lake after decent unpleasant efforts to get to ground level. How she was going to get back up in a way acceptable in public, she wasn’t sure. But she was confident this would be worth it. She sat awkwardly as she pulled her ballet flats off. Then came the joy of it as she dug her bare feet into the warm sand. “Ah, better than a hot bath. Well, on par.” She dug her fingers in too for good measure. The sand felt so free.
She wiped the sand off her hands on her pants and grabbed the bag she’d just gotten from the grocery store. First she pulled out the fruit cup. Then the bottle of aloe juice. Then the banana. Cravings were real and they truly were weird. Grocery trips were dangerous because she would see something and realize she wanted it. That was why she planned on recruiting her little brother, Alden, to be her grocery police. For now, though, she was on her own. With a fruit cup, aloe juice, and a banana. She pulled the plastic back on the fruit cup and tipped some into her mouth without an ounce of shame. Ah, so good. She set that down and twisted open the aloe juice. Sure, it was a whole liter, but it didn’t come smaller and it looked really, really good. She drank a swig of it and decided a liter was worth it. So refreshing. Cap back on, and rest in the sand. Next the banana. She peeled it and took a big bite. On the tail end of the aloe juice, it hit pretty hard with a curious and almost nasty taste. She continued eating it though, finding the weird taste kind of fun to experience. She tucked the peel back into the bag when it was void of banana. Another mouthful of fruit cup and she leaned back on her hands to stare up at the cloudy sky peacefully.
