Ethan loved days like this. The sun was shining, which made the fact that it was January a little bit better. Winter. Not his cup of tea, but at least he didn’t live in Alaska or something where it would be 50 below instead of 50 above. Thank the gods for that one. And with the sun shining and people smiling, it was just a great day. Of course, they were not laughing with him. And he had very little feeling left in his legs. Details, details. The point was, he was in an excellent mood despite minor difficulties.
Difficulties like the unusual form that Roman punishments could take. At least it wasn’t a barbed whip like the old days. Now that sounded unpleasant. After all, he was rather fond of his flesh staying a part of his body and not getting all sliced like that really thin meat on the Arby’s sandwiches. He liked his skin where it was. It did such a lovely job of keeping his insides on the inside.
But there was one thing skin didn’t usually like. Which was also the reason he was kneeling here in stocks along one of the roads in New Rome. Sand paper. No, skin didn’t usually like meeting sand paper on a personal level. And that was certainly personal. But that joke had so been worth it. After all, he had pranks in his blood. He was legacy of Mercury after all! Which meant his measure of fun had to be had. And at least he’d warned his friends in advance. Unfortunately that had backfired on him when people got a little miffed about all the toilet paper in the men’s lavatory being swapped for coarse grain sand paper. Sadly, people knew it was him. Which brought him to the present moment. He was supposed to be here for an hour and then get to go on his merry way, assuming his legs still had blood flowing. Which at the moment was questionable. Unsurprisingly, it seemed that he’d been forgotten. Or perhaps they wanted to extend his enjoyment an extra five or ten minutes.
He was Ethan though, and that meant that he was about as sour mooded as a chimp on a sugar high. So he squatted in place and beamed away at the passersby, which only seemed to act as further entertainment for all the other people out and about. And who was he other than a good source of entertainment. After all, there were a few who hadn’t run into the sand paper incident – like every girl in the camp, since he was not one to venture into the ladies room – who had thought it rather funny. And that was what he did it for. Well, there was the thrill of tricking people, of course. But also getting other people to smile and laugh was just as grand.
