Clare was doing one of the strange hobbies that only Clare really had a claim to. Which was sad, really, seeing as it was a real highlight of her time here. Well, besides Jason. Speaking of which, the son of Apollo just happened to be the topic of the day here in the lake among the fish and nyads she usually talked to. She had, of course, told them all about him the night he’d asked her out. Which meant that word spread like wildfire – the waterproof kind, if there was such a thing – around the inhabitants of the lake, as she knew all of them and they were very familiar with the daughter of their master.
And the fun, awkward thing was, fish and nyads did not understand that a boyfriend and a ‘mate’ were too entirely different things. Though she’d tried to explain it a hundred times, at least half the fish in the whole lake still didn’t get the idea. So she tried to keep off the topic when she could, but usually the fish would bother her to no end wondering when they were going to meet Jason. Though she’d promised them they would sometime, she had a feeling such a meeting would not go well considering Jason now had celebrity status with about a hundred fish and five nyads. And nyads could be horrible fangirls.
The thought struck her as she sat on the beach with her feet in the water, still completely dry as usual. They wouldn’t hit on Jason, would they? It wasn’t like she was a super possessive sort, or at least she hoped she wasn’t, but still. Things had been great since she’d met him at the dance. He was so perfect. Though admittedly even Clare got nervous at times. She’d never been in a relationship before and prayed to the gods that she didn’t mess things up. Jason was way too important to lose like that. It was these sort of things that plagued her mind as she gently stirred the water with her toes. She’d almost thought she’d screwed it up royally when they’d gone into the woods last she’d seen him. Because of her leading, they ran into a dragon. She blamed herself for that one. It would have only been a hundred times worse if he’d gotten hurt, but luckily her dad had shown up. Though she still felt a little bad that her dad had scared Jason. And she didn’t want to seem like that girl who went running to daddy when she got in trouble. Maybe it was just her encounter with Mars that had made her so want to prove herself. And wanting to show that she could hold her own in a fight for Jason’s sake too.
So she pulled off the necklace of stringed shells she’d dropped in the woods – and then had gone back secretly later to get again, hoping Jason didn’t find out about that one – and held it in her hand. There was some trick, she just knew it. So she held little self-string shells and watched them, trying to mentally feel for anything. Wait, there. Just a pinprick, but it was there. She closed her eyes and tugged at it in her mind. And just like a cork had been pulled, one of the shells gushed a stream of water out into the lake like a water fountain on steroids. She felt her stomach pull like the water was coming from her instead. Another shell burst, blasting out a second stream, and the pull on her stomach doubled until it started to hurt. She clasped her hand over the shells. “Stop, stop!” It took a few minutes of concentration, but finally they stopped, along with the uncomfortable pull.
She stared at the shells and a smile broke out on her face. She did it. She did it! She laughed out loud and hugged the shells to her like they were her favorite stuffed animal. Now she would never be without a weapon! She grinned and wiggled slightly in excitement, putting the necklace back on. She couldn’t wait to show Jason and Felicity and Charlie-Mack and Maddison and-… well, yeah basically everyone.
