Appearance ;;
Valerie is short, reaching a mere 5’5”, and would be able to blend into a crowd if it weren’t for her rather in-your-face attitude. Her eyes are an odd shade of light hazel and tend to betray her emotions even when she manages to hide them every other way. She has dark chocolate brown hair that reaches a little past her shoulders that she usually doesn’t bother to style any more than a simple ponytail. Her figure is very petite and does not really show a great deal of strength, though she is certainly not weak. For a Legionnaire, she does not appear to be very much do to her height and build, but she has a sort of presence about her in that she tends to carry herself very proudly.
Most of the time, Val tends to just stick to her purple camp shirt, jean shorts, and tennis shoes or flip flops. Occasionally she’ll throw on something different, like a tank top, though usually that’s about the limit on her wardrobe. Anything that gives the impression that she is overly feminine is out of the question. However, occasionally she might wear a simple piece of jewelry, mostly a small necklace if anything. She doesn’t really flaunt the fact that she owns any pieces of jewelry at all, though is proud to say she has never worn a dab of makeup in her life. Like any other full legionnaire, she has a tattoo on her left arm of her mother’s symbol, a crossed sword and torch, the letters “SPQR” and seven vertical bars.
Personality ;;
Valerie makes up for her unassuming appearance by having enough attitude for five people. She tends to be very abrasive and prefers to settle things immediately and right up in the face or the person in question. Though usually she doesn’t resort to it, she is not above throwing a punch to get her point across. For anything she has set her mind to, she is incredibly hard to shake or persuade otherwise. When it comes to things she cares about, she can get extremely defensive, even if the perceived threat isn’t actually all that much of a threat at all. She also tends to be very expressive about her emotions unless she consciously tries to hide them, so her facial expressions and mannerisms are very open and animated.
On the flip side, she has a big heart for someone who also has anger issues. Along with expressing her harsher emotions very openly, she really wears her heart on her sleeve. If she cares about something, she shows it. Though she doesn’t always admit to it, she has plenty of times cried over thinks as small as characters in a book she’s reading. She is very devoted to anything or anyone she deems important and loyal and persistent to a fault. If she wants something or has a goal, she will not give up unless she gets a strong sense that it is causing someone close to her pain. She considers her cohort, as well as select others from other cohorts, her family and will do just about anything for them.
Powers ;;
Valerie, as the child of a war goddess, has powers very similar to those of Mars’ kids. She is very adept with a wide array of weapons, for instance. However, most of her skill lies in strategy. As her mother is connected to the pride and defense of the motherland (aka Rome), she tends to have a knack for defensive strategies, while her studying and personal effort have made her better at offensive strategy as well. She also has a gift for finding people’s potential on the battlefield and encouraging it. She uses this ability a lot when she is working with her cohort as a centurion in Camp Jupiter.

History ;;
Charles Smyth was an officer in the US Coast Guard stationed in southern California when he met Bellona. The two got along instantly and within a week of meeting were in a serious relationship. Unfortunately, after a month and a half, Charles was re-stationed and left. Three months later, though, when he was back home in Washington, he received a gift in the form of a basket on his doorstep with a baby girl inside and a lengthy note explaining who the goddess was and what to expect with the child. Though he was surprised and a little unsure at first, he soon accepted the fact that he was now a father.
While Valerie was growing up, she spent almost as much time living with her aunt and uncle and cousin just outside Seattle, WA as she did with her father, seeing as he had regular assignments that would take him all over the country. With her father, her natural tendency towards a harsh attitude was almost encouraged, as he has the same issues. With her aunt and uncle, her aunt encouraged her [not to hide her emotions, and was an excellent example of doing so. Between the two households and her own natural tendencies from Bellona, she built her unusual personality. Unfortunately, this personality made it hard for her to make friends as well growing up.
That changed, though, when she was ten and several wolves showed up at their door overnight. Thankfully, Bellona had left an explanation about Lupa and the Wolf House, so Charles allowed the wolves to take his young daughter to the Wolf House for her trials. She spent several months there, training and learning the Roman ways before she was allowed to venture out to find Camp Jupiter. It took her a couple weeks, but finally she made it, was sorted into her cohort, and put on probation until she could prove herself. Within a month, she was a full member and received her tattoo.
The next six years passed fairly uneventful for Val. She trained and played in war games and overall get the sense of what it meant to be a Roman Legionnaire. When she was 16, however, the war started. She went with her cohort to fight in the Battle of Orthys, gladly taking to the challenge and the thrill of the battle. It only lasted so long, though, as for the first time she witnessed the real carnage and terror or war. The war left her shaken. Though she acted the same around camp, she questioned things more. She didn’t stop fighting, daughter of the war goddess as she was, but the war made her sink into herself for a while, thinking just as much as training. Until eventually she went back to her own self without any apparent trigger. She avoided talking about the was though, or kept it only in general terms when she had to. For the last two years, she has gone through her training as usual, enjoying the peace that came with the end of the war, but always staying alert for the next threat.
