He was not ready for this. He was so not ready for this. Why had he signed up for this date night anyway? Probably because he was supposed to be an example or some rubbish like that. Why couldn’t Zidane do that? He was the one who was actually in a relationship. Remus was, as his sister so fluently put it, emotionally constipated. Yet here he was, trying to sort through the layers of the borrowed suit. Seriously, he almost felt like that kid from Christmas Story who couldn’t put his arms down. Did they have to make this so incredibly complicated? And there was not a shadow’s chance that he was wearing a tie. Mostly… because he didn’t want to admit that he didn’t know how to tie one. Gods, he would never live that one down. As it stood, he had a feeling he would never live this whole evening down.
On the flip side, it was just like regular hanging out with Felicity, right? And she was, as he would consider, a good friend. Which meant it was totally okay, right? And hanging out with Felicity was usually pretty cool. Ah, so many questions and so very few answers. Wasn’t that a common instance nowadays though? At least, in the stuffy little world of Remus Stone. But he’d try to keep that part to a minimum tonight. After all a) it was supposed to be a fun event (which he still argued he had absolutely no hand in), and b) he usually didn’t have any reason for being stuffy and annoying around Felicity.
Speaking of which, he hadn’t gotten her anything. Dangit. He knew he forgot something. He reached into the drawer of his nightstand and grabbed a handful of denarii, unceremoniously shoving them in his pocket, completely ignoring the fact that these dress pants were not meant for holding many things and it didn’t help the attempted formal look. Ah well. He left the principia area where his and Zidane’s rooms were and set off the short way to the open-air market along the via principalis. There were too many choices. He really should have asked Zidane about this. What do you get for a girl anyway? Especially one in such an unusual standing, what with the valentine he got from her and still trying to sort out his own thoughts. Was a flower too much? Roses were usually romantic, right? So might be a good idea to stay away from those for the time being. Chocolate seemed cliché, and he wasn’t even sure if she liked it. Dangit, this was not easy at all.
He wandered over to a stall he never in all his years here went to. A jewelry stall. Couldn’t go wrong with shiny stuff, right? Hopefully. He looked over where all there was, feeling like he was so far out of his comfort zone at the moment the zone wasn’t even visible to the naked eye. He felt like he must have pondered there for a full five minutes before he found something that looked promising. It was a necklace that was small and unusual, but maybe that was the trick. That whole, getting you something not like normal stuff because you’re not like normal people. In a good way. He hurried up and bought it just to shut his brain up.
Little jewelry box in hand, he set off to the fourth cohort barracks to wait for Felicity. Escorting was normal, right? Gods, this was just all so confusing!
