Magic hadn't always been banned from the land of Aredale. Not long
ago--about three decades, in fact--magic had thrived in the country and
was home to many species of magical beings and creatures. That was
before Aredale had caught Farouk the Conqueror's eye. King Farouk was
(and is to this day) a greedy man with a thirst for power and gold. When
he had conquered all of the lands to the South, he looked to expand his
empire further, and the prosperous Northern kingdom of Aredale would be
a prime target. However, Aredale was a force to be reckoned with, as it
had a powerful army and no one had ever breached the great defenses of
the kingdom, though many had tried. That did not discourage King Farouk,
for he had a plan; a plan that would later claim thousands of lives,
including those of children. One bitterly cold winter night, when every
citizen of Aredale was inside the warm castle walls to celebrate the
birthday of their good king, a troop of entertainers arrived. They
brought with them music, dancing, singing, and plague. Of course, this
troop was all a part of King Farouk's scheming, and the plan unfolded as
one might suspect. One by one, nearly every citizen of Aredale became
infected with the pathogen. It left terrible lesions on the skin,
wrecked havoc on the respiratory system, and eventually killed most of
those who were infected in a slow and terrible way. Even the great army
of Aredale was largely infected by the disease, and the kingdom's
defenses were no match for King Farouk's soldiers, who were healthy and
immune to this plague, since it had originated in the South, where their
people had developed immunity over many generations. Those who had
survived the plague were given a choice--kneel to their new king or be
slaughtered. The Aredalian King's head was displayed on a spike for all
those to see, a tactic to scare the citizens of Aredale in to
submission. Naturally, resistance occurred for some time during the
first few weeks, and even months, of King Farouk's reign, but that was
before the Purge. Fearing the power of magic, Farouk the Conqueror
declared war on all things magic, and his soldiers ravaged the city,
kicking down doors and pulling people from their beds. Even those who
were simply suspected of having magical abilities were slaughtered like
animals. No man, woman, or child was spared. The streets of the
Aredalian city were colored red with blood of the innocent who were
murdered that night. From then on, Farouk the Conqueror became known as
Farouk the Bloody. The cruel king still rules to this day, and the ban
on magic still hold strong.
