Name ;; Avetis David Washington
Nickname(s) ;; Sir, Mr. Washington
Age ;; 56
Birthday ;; May 17
Gender ;; male
Species ;; Demigod
Immortal Parent ;; Quirinus, god of Roman state
Years at Camp ;; ten, now retired
Celebrity Claim ;; Samuel L. Jackson
Appearance ;;
Avetis stands 6 feet 2 inches tall with dark chocolate skin and brown, intense eyes, though one of his eyes is often hidden behind an eye patch from an old battle wound he received while in the United States Air Force, something he refused to take ambrosia for, but instead bore as a mark of pride. Though at one time he had a full head of hair, he has since grown bald, though he still keeps the mustache and goatee precisely trimmed and managed. His face has heavy, severe lines from both his age and his tendency to have a serious expression more often than not. If one looks closely, they can see dark scars around his damaged eye, from the same injury that caused him to lose his sight in that eye. While he does not appear to be heavily muscular, he is very agile and does have surprising strength. He trains on a regular basis to keep himself prepped for anything, both because of his demigod training and his years in the Air Force. He is a skilled pilot and for a time acted as instructor to newcomers on the latest fighters, despite the criticism and doubt he received from others because of his impaired vision. In fact, he has trained his remaining eye to see incredibly well on its own without its pair.
For wardrobe, Avetis favors black, both to blend in and because he feels dressing in this way commands a degree of respect. His clothes are always just loose-fitting enough that he can move freely in them without being too baggy. He also tends to wear a long black leather jacket no matter what the weather, along with thick leather boots and black leather gloves, token from his time in the service.
Personality ;;
Avetis is harsh and cold in demeanor, not one to give in to anything and a born leader, though this might be attributed to his father, Quirinus, god of the Roman state. He takes almost everything seriously, though it’s not completely unheard of for him to crack a smile here and there. Usually if he is smiling, it is a bad day to be his enemy. However, just because he is stand-offish most of the time, does not mean that he is all of the time. There are few people he allows close to him, if it can be called that. Though he is not the official leader of the specific government hit squad he was pulled into from the Air Force, he is the oldest, and he tends to take the idea that the other members are his responsibility. He may not be elected leader, but oftentimes he takes over control when the situation allows for it. He has a thirst for power and, thanks to his role in recruitment, he feels like he deserves that power. He follows the gods to a limited degree, mostly only his father, Quirinus. Jupiter and the rest of the Olympians, though, he figures could and should be replaced. And not to mention their children back at the stick-in-the-mud camp. He is bitter at the camp that did not promote him as high as he wanted to go; he had been sorted into fourth cohort and though he petitioned for it and worked towards it, was never promoted to a position of higher status than foot soldier. What he desired and felt he deserved was not only to be sorted into the first, but to rise to praetorship. He feels this is a personal insult to his skills and has born a grudge against the camp ever since. He uses this in part to fuel his anger and his drive to get back at the camp that scorned him.
Powers ;;
To understand Avetis, we must first understand his father. Quirinus is a god who has worn several hats through his long history. At first he was a god of the original settlers of the Rome area in Italy, the Sabines, where he was a war god. When the Romans came in and adapted him, he became a god of great renown, on par with Jupiter and Mars in the illustrious Capitoline Triad. He was at the height of his new-found power. He was god of the Roman State, then something quite important. However, before long, the state started to wane, giving way to eventual empirical take-over. And Quirinus lost his position of importance. By the rise of the empire, Quirinus was all but forgotten. Though while the Romans may have nearly forgotten him, he hardly forgot them. And he hated them for their betrayal, something that he passes on to his children…
Weapons Proficiency – Though not on par with children of Mars, children of Quirinus are gifted with weaponry slightly better than are the average other demigod, due to their father’s previous rule over war.
Leadership – The children of Quirinus, because of his ties to the Roman state, have naturally strategic and politically-oriented ways of thinking and excel in these areas.
Grudges – The children of Quirinus naturally hold grudges far longer than they should and can be known to have explosive anger at times.
Government - Avetis, as a child of Quirinus, has a knack for understanding and deciphering law and code. He can find the flaws and loopholes in anything. Thus he has an innate ability to create rules that are virtually devoid of error. He is also skilled at diplomacy and debate and can be very persuasive on more political topics.
Family ;;
Quirinus -- father
Helaine Washington -- mother, deceased
Mairyse McCloud -- wing-woman in AF, as good as sister, deceased
Eve McCloud -- "niece", considers like a daughter
History ;;
Helaine Washington was a Senator from New York state when she met Quirinus while on a reelection campaign. He approached her after a speech and the two ended up talking into the night about various political points. Again the next day he showed up, and then the next. Finally it was her last day in that town and they, well, stuff happened. Helaine ended up pregnant (yet still managed to win the election, thanks to the news of the incident not reaching the media until after the election). A scandal in the media ensued, so she backed down from her position in the Senate and ended up a secretary in the New York City governor’s office. She was bitter about her loss and blamed herself. After a brief few months of hard depression, the baby was born and she found a new will to keep pressing on, for him. She named him Avetis, a name meaning “good news”, as he had brought her out of her darkest hour. It was hardly a month later, one quiet night at home, when Quirinus showed up at the door. At first, Helaine was furious to see the man who had cost her her career, but after a few punches were thrown by the irate woman, he managed to get her to calm down, saying he would explain everything. And explain he did. Quirinus stayed up all night with the doubtful Helaine and by morning, she knew everything about her son and about the difficult path ahead of him thanks to his heritage. By daybreak, Quirinus left, not for the last time though.
Taking the cue from both her own personality and from her newfound knowledge, she raised Avetis from infancy with the idea that life was hard and he wasn’t going to get any breaks unless he made them for himself. She taught him that there is such a thing as familial love, and that it was possibly the only thing going for him. He trusted his mother, but no one else, as his extended family had abandoned him and would not even acknowledge his being. He got in trouble at school right from the off because he wasn’t afraid of authority and was often found even taking on the principal when he was sent there after two weeks of going to the counselor in first grade. Though he came from a prestigious family and went to a prestigious school, he was pinned down by his teachers as nothing better than a to-be gangster. His home life was better though. He got along well with his mother, and usually he saw his father, now a welcome face, at least once a year. After all, the god was no longer respected by most of his peers, so he had no problem flying under the radar of Jupiter’s no-interaction rules, as he was seen as as good as already faded.
When Avetis turned ten, his mother took him on a “vacation” out west, but he picked up on the fact that she hadn’t bought him a return ticket, which he wasn’t afraid to confront her about. When the two were alone together walking away from civilization on what his mother described as a “little hike” out in California, she explained to him about the Camp he was going to, told him everything Quirinus had told her that long night some ten years ago. He didn’t like the sound of leaving his mother, but any protest was interrupted by a pack of unnaturally large wolves. Without even a hug – such a thing she believed would show weakness in front of Lupa, which was definitely a bad thing – his mother left him at the mercy of the wolves. Thankfully, his time with Lupa was short-lived. As original – but unconfirmed/secret – myth had it that Quirinus was the deified Romulus, the founder of Rome and one of the twins whom she had raised. So she was quite familiar with his father, which did not necessarily mean that she didn’t give him a hard time, though.
Eventually, after a challenging solo journey, Avetis made it to camp in one piece. He was quickly sorted into fourth cohort because of his lack of much significant powers and his father’s currently low status. This he was furious about, believing he deserved first, but he dealt with it decently as the years passed. He worked hard and spent little to no time with simple stuff like making friends and enjoying himself. He knew what he wanted and he was determined to get it. Because gods, did that principia call his name. Five years passed and he was not elevated to centurion. So he approached the praetors about it, daring to enter the principia without a summons. That, for starters, did not help his impression, then demanding centurionship did not do much either. He was flat out denied the position and was escorted to the door by two angry greyhounds. A week later, someone else was awarded the open position, which Avetis took as a personal insult, especially as he thought poorly of the individual who got the position. He went back to his ways of shunning authority figures since he obviously would never become one in this run-down dumpy excuse for a camp. He scraped by, finally finishing his stint with the military camp and returned home to New York… to find that his mother had died from heart failure just two months prior.
Broken hearted and lost, he joined the Air Force to find his way. It wasn’t long before he fit right in there in the get-tough-or-go-home atmosphere. Naturally he was already tough from Camp Jupiter, though there was no place for a gladius here. He was handed a handgun and a flight manual and he immediately took to both like a fish in water. A few years in and he was flying fighters and had put his droll Camp Jupiter years behind him, even if his grudge against the Romans was still as strong as ever. As the years passed, he went up in rank, eventually making it to general. He allowed just one person to get close to him during this time: his wing-woman Mairyse McCloud. She was like a sister to him, so her daughter became like a niece. Avetis had a family again, so to speak.
Everything started to change when he was forty, though. He was approached by a government official who also turned out to be a demigod, and was enlisted for an program that was in its infant stages still. Though he was loath to leave the Air Force, he saw the prudence in the man’s words. So he followed. He still kept in close touch with Mairyse and was still allowed to keep his home near the Air Force base, only listed as more of a part-time pilot for the time being while he helped the new program. At 41, he started his mission to help enlist other demigods and legacies for the program, including one nineteen-year-old Skylar Van Denend from the Marines, among others.
Just two years later, when he was 43, tragedy struck his life again in the loss of his ‘sister’ Mairyse to a gorgon attack. Luckily, her then 6 year old daughter, Eve, managed to get away, so Avetis took it upon himself to raise the girl. He cared for her, but he his way of showing it took after his mother: that is to say, he was a believer in tough love more often than not. He trained her young to handle a gun – with imperial gold bullets fashioned by himself – and his old gladius, which albeit was a little big for her. He taught her about Camp Jupiter in the most negative light possible, painting a horrid picture of a camp of the enemy. At the same time, he trained Skylar in every weapon he had, which was considerable. Since she had never been to Camp Jupiter, he took it upon himself to see to it that she become the deadly force he knew she could be beyond her already considerable Marines training, and the force that the program was looking for.
Eventually, it was time to send Eve to Camp Jupiter itself, but he convinced the higher-ups in the program to take her on as a sort of spy within the Camp, since none of them had connections with the place anymore. She would be able to fit in without being noticed, where people like Avetis were both too old to infiltrate the heart of the camp anymore, and his records there were not exactly spotless. During the next nine years, she visited him frequently and reported to him what was going on. In the meantime, he continued his training with Skylar mostly, and occasionally new initiates, all the while hunting down fresh new demigods and legacies to take part in their cause.
