Mors was not above breaking a rule or two for his family, perhaps a bit of that Mercury influence. He didn't like it, but this Tessa Yates was pushing him a bit. He'd seen her around camp at times when he visited his family and his beloved Charlotte. Her heart beat in his ears worked much harder than it should, the breath of life that sometimes escaped her. She was being a fool with the life he had given her, and today he had again witnessed her frivolous nature. His silent steps went unnoticed by the little legacy, her chest heaving as she tried to get the pain under control. The light red strands of hair sticking to the brick wall she leaned on for support.
“How often must your name appear on my list before you rest?” Mors questioned with a solemn voice.
Tessa's heart jumped to her throat, she had thought she got away from everyone. People would be worried when they saw her this way, so hurt and tired. “Lord Mors... I... list? No, no I'm fine.”
Her tone, and assuredness made him want to roll his eyes. Though he simply stared at her instead. “Child I am the reaper of souls, why do you think you would know better than I?”
A stutter in her breathing hurt the wounds still lingering in her chest. “I...I'm a medic, and I can feel very well my own injuries so....”
Mors, though often does his best to be polite could not allow her to finish “No. You are emotionally compromised and unable to comprehend your own injuries properly. Do not make my grandchildren continue to anguish over you.” His cold stare continued to fixate on her, the emotionless voice held a kind of soft anger and seriousness that could shutter any heart.
The legacy could not meet his eyes, she knew he was right but she simply couldn't sit and do nothing. Besides the two months of bed rest should be over by now, it was just that Lilith wouldn't take away her profile. “I'm.....just trying to be of use.”
“You are worse than useless as you are, bringing pain, worry and extra work to those around you. Have you not been admitted repeatedly to the infirmary for fainting? Have my grandchildren not used time and energy to restrain you when you attempt to work? It would be easier if you would rest.”
Tessa's eyes turned back up to him, filled with pain and confusion “I can't! I know I'm a bother but at least.....” She looked away again, she didn't want him to see her selfishness. Didn't want him to know she craved the attention it got her, even at the price of her own health. “My apologies....Lord Mors.... I shouldn't raise my voice....”
“At least what?” his voice was not condemning, nor curious. As his normal tone, there was nothing.
“Nothing, I just want to help.” She couldn't meet his eyes, afraid he would also see through her as Apollo did. See to the selfishness that was there, to call her self centered. She really was useless.
“Teach Lilith, or perhaps Gunnar some of the things you've learned. Gunnar might do well with some medical knowledge.”
That went straight through her heart. Gunnar needed her, or so she had convinced herself at times. Needed her to be his medic. To patch him up when he came home, but perhaps Mors was right. She wasn't needed for the first twenty years of his life, and she knew he'd leave her soon. He had to have seen who she was inside. So teaching him might let him live longer, even if it was without her she'd be fine. Eventually. “I'll try....”
With a bit of a nod he left her, shadows taking him elsewhere, perhaps to find a present for his daughter. He hadn't given her anything for a long time.
