It was late afternoon, and the sugar rush from Halloween candy was finally starting to cool down. It had been days of hyper Mercury kids, and over excited Mars children. Injuries abound. She took care of them either way, sometimes while she was off work. It was nice to be able to have fun for a while, despite all the recent disappearances. Tessa was moving on again, or really completely ignoring the fact she saw her father with another child. Another family.
"Ahh, little miss. This place has gone upside down since I was last here, do you know where Her Fella's Candy Shop is?" The smooth male voice rang in her ears. Familiar. So very Familiar. Tessa turned around, a bit of shock in her face as the looked to her father. He wasn't as tall as she remembered him being, or maybe she had just gotten taller. "Miss?" he took her hand and gave it a kiss. "Might you be a fan? Your face has gone white."
"Dad..." she drew her hand back, and took a step away "I...it's Tessa." She looked at him hurt, cradling her hand like it was injured.
It took a moment for him to recognize the name, he actually had to stop and think. That shocked him, and the pretenses he had a moment before fell away. "Tessa. You grew." He gave her a small smile, though not the flirty one he was using a few moments ago.
"I... yeah. It's been eight years... You.... have a new family?" She desperately hoped he would deny it. Maybe it wasn't what she thought.
"Yeah. Meghan is the sweetest little dumpling. And her mother, gods she's wonderful." he smiled talking about them, sending a dagger through her heart. "But you've got this now right? Seven years, or eight now right? I never thought a child of mine would even survive this place"
Tessa tried to talk. She really did, to come up with some kind of coherent reply. A congratulations. Something. He didn't think she would survive? She sent him letters, cards. Every year. "My...cards?"
"Oh, oh yeah I got those. Listen you don't need to send them anymore alright? Just don't worry about it. It was nice seeing you again." he gave her a smile and a nod before leaving, and that was it. Seven years without talking to him, and when he finally did talk to her that was it? She made her way back to her room. Gunnar told her to call him so he could pick her up, so she could stay at his house. She couldn't think about that right now though. couldn't think about the gun that was to her head a few days ago from that man with the mask. She only cried into her cold pillow.
