Appearance ;;
Orcus is, when he chooses to be, rather unthreatening. Warm complexion, silky light brown hair that reaches to his shoulders, a decent smile when he chooses to show it. He dresses nicely usually, formally, such as a suit and tie and polished shoes. His eyes are a warm and inviting chocolate brown. He has what most would call pianist fingers; long and thin. He also stands a very unimposing five food seven inches. The only thing that makes him look at all out of place is his perhaps overly defined facial features, from thin lips to an unusually prominent nose, but nothing that would really cause alarm.
However, he does not always look like this. He is, after all, an Underworld god and the punisher of broken oaths, so he hardly wants to look friendly to those he sees strictly on business. When in these situations, he presents himself quite differently. His usually smooth hair is greyish and matted and his eyes are an eerie grey tone. His skin is pale and almost sickly greenish and seems to be a bit wrinkled, giving him something the appearance of a specter or dark mythical creature. He has what might be mistaken for deep laugh lines, but not in the pleasant variety. His clothing is equally unpleasant, usually sticking with dark hues and odd textures. Sometimes he leaves his victim’s dried blood stains on them for effect.
Personality ;;
Orcus is rather split in his personality, depending on whether he is attending to business or personal things.
Person Time:
He’s somewhat laid back and enjoys wandering the world or the Underworld, or reading or his favorite hobby of searching for his faded wife (see history). He enjoys the company of the other Underworld gods, as well as regular mortals, though never in a romantic way; he does not have and never has had any demigod children, which he far prefers. Nothing against demigods, he just prefers none of his own, considering marriage is an oath and he is fully and completely against breaking oaths himself. That, and he still believes his wife is out there somewhere, so to him, the oath is still in place. His wife had one demigod daughter before they were married, but he believes that since she had not sworn an oath at the time, it is permissible. Even when he is in his personal time, he sticks to his job and, should he run into someone who has broken an oath, even simply an “I promise”, he goes straight to business mode.
On Business:
Orcus does not mess around. A good number of the mortals, demigods, and legacies in the Fields of Punishment were brought there because of him. Though he is also quite agreeable to punishing people before death too and is very close with the Fates in this, as they share his beliefs and the four work together often in pursuing justice. Sometimes he can seem to not be paying attention to things, but sometimes he lets the bad guy ‘get away’ in the knowledge that the higher they climb, the harder and further they fall. Though it is not in his realm of duty, he also likes to protect those who honor their oaths at great costs.
NOTE: He also does frequently look like this casually when in the Underworld. Depends on mood.
Powers ;;
Shadow Travel – As an Underworld god, he can shadow travel, though not as well as Pluto himself. As a god though, he has no real distance limit and does not suffer ill effects from traveling this way. However, if he goes to a place that is under the control of foreign gods – say, Egypt or Japan – he is weaker and may have to take multiple trips to get out the same distance. He does not let this hinder him, however, and will go to great lengths if he believes the one in question is too far out of line and needs, ah, correction.
Punisher of Broken Oaths – Orcus has a whole arsenal of tricks up his sleeve that he uses when he comes across one needing correction. Everything from persuading the person to ruin their own live with guilt and shame and perhaps financial and mental ruin because of stress-induced addictions of the like. He also likes to tweak things less under the individual’s control such as medical emergencies or the like.
Mist Manipulation - As an Underworld god, Orcus is especially good with manipulating the Mist to hide, change, or similar the appearance of things. He cannot make things into other things, however, via the Mist, but can make them at least tangible.
Family ;;
parents - unknown
Laverna - wife (faded)
Atilius - son (faded)
Samantha Mason - step-daughter
History ;;
Orcus has been punishing broken oaths since the Golden Age of the Titans. Though he was present, he did not take part in the war that brought the Titans to their doom, merely staying on the sidelines watching both sides for signs of someone turning back on their word. He ended up seeming to fight for one side one moment, then the other the next, but in all honesty, he was only unbiasedly targeting the traitors. When the Olympians came into power, he supported them for the most part, though kept true to his duty, so he frowned upon someone like Jupiter being in charge and chose to stay in the Underworld where most of his work lay and also the more honorable Pluto reigned. He was dedicated to his work day in and day out. Until…
He met her. He’d been on a case of someone who had been twisting his promises to get himself into a higher position in the Roman Empire. The goddess behind the trouble was Laverna, goddess of con artists, who happened to be so close to her subject that she was actually at the time baring his child. However, Cupid thought this opportunity was too good to pass up, and he struck them both with his powers. Orcus fell deeply in love with Laverna almost immediately, and it hardly took much longer for Laverna to return the feelings. Once her child was born, she dropped her off with her mortal father as was normal, and dedicated herself to Orcus. It was not long at all before the two were married. He did not hold it against her that she was already a mother, considering she had not yet made any restricting oath when it had happened. Laverna was the light to his dark world and he cherished her much. Neither had any (further) demigod children, but they did have a son together, who ended up a minor Underworld god like his father. Sadly, he only lived about fifty years before any trace of him was gone, leaving his parents to hold close to each other for comfort.
Everything seemed to be going well, until the Roman Empire fell. Things started getting shaky for some of the minor immortals such as Orcus and Laverna. They were not as well remembered as the ones who got better mention in the myths. Orcus only survived because justice was something that rang true with every culture. Laverna… was not so lucky. She lasted a good while, but faded more and more every year. Finally, when she knew her time was nearly up, she spoke to Orcus one last time, promising him that should he keep her close in his heart, she would never truly leave. This was the last he heard from her, as she was gone by morning.
Orcus was a broken man after this, so he turned to his work all the more for distraction. About a decade later, he learned, however, an interesting fact from the Fates: Laverna was alive. Just… not herself anymore. With her last energy before she faded, she preserved her soul and reached out to newlywed couple on the outskirts of civilization and pushed herself into their lives in the form of their unborn child. Her memory was near completely washed away in the process, because she was unable to hold on to it in the effort. However, she did manage to keep herself somewhat alive in this new child. Orcus began his search for her, but before the child reached the age of six, just as he came close to finding her, she died at the hands of pirates. Again he fell into desperate need for distraction, but it wasn’t long before he learned that the child, Laverna, had opted for rebirth. Again he set to searching. He never found her, and again she died and again she was reborn. Over and over, she was reborn, either dying before she could qualify for the Isles of the Blessed, or turning down the invitation when it was finally offered because part of her wanted to keep going.
For little over a thousand years, Orcus kept up the search as he also kept to his job, and all this time he kept missing her by only a hair. One time in 1846, her soul had been gone in death for hardly an hour when he found her. However, it would seem the Fates finally agree with him, as he was visiting New Rome on business when he came across a young woman who bore the exact same aura of his beloved, alive and well…
