Name ;; Merida Elinor McKinney
Nickname(s) ;; Mer, Kins, Ree, take your pick
Age ;; 11
Birthday ;; June 22
Gender ;; Female
Species ;; demigod
Immortal Parent ;; Auster, the South Wind
Years at Camp ;; less than 1
Celebrity Claim ;; Francesca Capaldi
Appearance ;; Merida is all of about 4’6” and is nothing but spunk. She is very pale with dark eyes. It’s hard to tell what color they are, but somewhere around deep brown. Her hair is her most surprising quality though. It is irresistibly red and naturally and wildly curly. If she actually used a brush on it, it would probably be a while fizz. A comb is fine though. Her curls reach all the way about half a foot past her shoulders, give or take. If she straightened them, they would reach nearly to her backside. When she pulls her hair back, be it in a ponytail or pigtails, it’s a head of attemptedly tame poof followed by a twisty followed by more red poof. Her favorite color just happens to be purple, which looks questionable with red hair, but she doesn’t care. Though she is tickled pink with the fact that the camp color is purple (gold is pretty good too). Though the boots need to be Mary Janes and she’s quite happy. Then there’s her smile. It’s bright and quite contagious and she uses it a lot.
Personality ;;
Merida is about as easily controlled as her hair is. She takes after her father. Well, and mother, seeing as her mother was similar to her father, hence how they met (see history). The odd thing about Merida, though, is that she not only takes after Auster, but Notus a little as well. The two are the Roman and Greek (respectively) versions of the same god, her father. Trouble is, Auster is very fickle and can change aspects by the day. Merida is much the same. To know Merida, one must know her father. Auster is a little on the lazy side, though Notus is very quick-acting. So with Merida, it varies by the day. Some days she really, really, really just wants to veg. These aren’t often, considering her youth, but give it time; she’ll grow into it. However, she can be very demanding. She doesn’t believe people are worth getting anything unless they actually do something to get it. This isn’t an earn thing, but more of a take thing. Don’t ask for help. Just go do it, trail by fire. In this respect, Merida can seem a bit disrespectful. She’d rather be told she was wrong to do something than to actually go ask permission. Most give credit to her youthful enthusiasm, but she’s not growing out of this one any time soon unless there is dramatic intervention. It’s just in her blood.
Back to those oddball days. Merida enjoys getting her hands on a good fantasy book on those days. She’ll find a shady spot in the summer or an indoor (well warm) sunny spot in the winter, because, after all, South Wind is not known for liking cold weather. In fact, her father rather hates Boreas and makes a point of opposing him. Similarly, little Merida hate hate hates winter. She has a very low cold tolerance, and seeing as this is her first fall in Camp Jupiter, she is unsure what to expect. Already the color-changing leaves has her worried, so she’s saving up denarii for a big fluffy coat so she can wear it to training regardless of if her centurions say it is okay. She’s cold, darn it!
Powers ;;
Merida has a lot of unusual little powers, but it should be noted that none are fully developed yet. She has a lot of limits based on her age.
Aerokinesis – Merida can control the south wind. She is strongest at this during the summer months and is basically useless in Spring, Fall, and Winter… so far. If a south wind is passing through the area, she can detect it pretty easily (mastered that before camp without realizing it) and recently she has learned how to draw southerlies to herself within a quarter mile radius of her current location.
Flying – (yes, I said flying.) Merida can, to a very limited degree and only in Summer, control southerlies around her to create a sort of vortex that will lift her off the ground. Positive: she’s not that heavy. Negative: she’s not that experienced. At the moment, she can achieve roughly two feet on a good strong, windy day when she has lots of winds to control. It does wear her out quickly though, as she can only do this for about one minute. However, that’s plenty long enough to get out of the way of a low blow, so good enough for her.
Heat and Fire Manipulation – Most powerful on warm days, and still nowhere near as good as Vulcan kids. However, her father controls the hot winds, so she does have the ability to raise the temperature within 3 feet of herself using the southerlies. So far, no luck with spontaneous combustion, but she’s working on it. Dandelion puffs are great for practice and she’s determined to one day be able to raise the temperature around one enough that it will catch fire. Currently, she can achieve a temperature rise of about 5 degrees Fahrenheit, which she usually only uses to help herself during winter, warming up the air inside her coat.
Speed – Wind. It’s fast. Her dad was one of the four called in to protect Mount Olympus during Kronos’ attacks during the first war, simply because he and his three brothers were faster than any other god (sorry, Mercury) and no one could get past them by air (hence the funny idea of Kronos in an elevator). Merida is still working on this one, but already her reflexes are pretty fast and she tends to move quicker than others, though most attribute this with her age and energy. However, back to those oddball days. Just because she can move fast, doesn’t always mean she does.
