Appearance ;;
Janus standing an unimposing 6’0”. Pretty average. He is skinny and appears to have aged well, being an older god. And, then again, being a god, can age as well as he pleases, but he puts little stock in appearance. If he did, he would be a hermit. Why? Because not many can stand to look at a man with two faces. A chin over each shoulder. An ear dead center facing whomever he is speaking with. This is his godly form. Silver hair, swept up as though he just got free of a terrible wind storm. Eyes so pale blue they look grey as well. Pale skin and sharp cheekbones. Eyebrows that seem to have a personality of their own, which is bad enough, as each face he possesses has a personality. The right side is kind and friendly, polite and respectful. The left side couldn’t care less what you think and is perfectly okay harassing and insulting you. There is precious little they agree upon, which makes his one-faced incognito look rather peculiar, as both personalities are still present and he can be caught arguing with himself.
He always dresses nicely, preferring dark clothing and especially his favorite tailcoat. Incognito, he can be more casual, but he always has one thing on hand: his godly symbol. That is, the key. He can pull it out at any time, usually why he likes pockets, and insert in the air to create a personal doorway to anywhere. Thus he greatly enjoyed the advance in fashion away from the pocketless toga.
Personality ;;
RIGHT
Janus’ right face is probably the best face. Right smiles a lot, gives compliments, greatly respects people, the nine. He is a regular gentleman. He likes to be as helpful as Left – and the laws – allow him to be. He has a similar problem to Prometheus. The future is a burden, and Janus has a slight idea of the future, being the god of decisions. He knows what a person is likely to choose. Right likes to try to help them make the right (no pun intended) choice.
LEFT
Janus’ left face is the complete opposite. He exists to be a nuisance. In fact, he likes to claim that he is the one who put the “I” in nuisance just to throw spellers off. “After all,” says Left, “I should be in nuisance.” (queue Right rolling his eyes). Left jokes at inappropriate times, has many a time disrespected gods to their faces (especially Juno. She’s funniest when she’s mad.).
JANUS
As one, Janus is a Roman god, and only that. He never cared much for the Greeks until they were under the control of the Romans. Then he messed with them all the time. Just ask some of the guys who wanted to be Plato-level philosophers. Janus drove them mad, making them second guess absolutely everything until they lost their sanity. No, Janus is not always nice. He takes his job seriously. Kind of. He’s somewhere between Terminus (stick-up-butt serious) and Mercury (forget your troubles). But seeing as Janus has two sides to play with here, he could be on both ends simultaneously.
Powers ;;
Transportation As mentioned before, Janus can go anywhere at any time he pleases, simply by pulling out his key, inserting it in the air before him, opening the door it creates, and walking through. Another may come with him, but only if they are holding his hand. He can only support one extra traveler, as this sort of traveling is very taxing on demigod and legacy bodies and spreading it over more than one would mean lessening his protection and risking their health and life itself.
Switch-A-Roo Janus has two faces, but they don’t always show as two faces. Sometimes he hides them as one. Here is the fun part. He can, and often does, forget this. He is hard to have a conversation with due to the fact that he cannot always focus on who he is talking to and sometimes starts talking to himself instead.
Advice Janus is very intuitive, even if he often appears a fool. If you know what to ask, you can learn a lot from him, but it will probably cost you a headache to learn it, and you better take notes. Janus likes to help, but he is still bound by some laws, even if he doesn’t like to listen to Jupiter.
A Blessing and A Curse This is more his offspring. You can tell his offspring because they hold a great burden of being born with the same two personalities as their father. They grow up very familiar with the effects of Bipolar Disorder, manically at a young age until they come to control it better, but it can never be fully controlled as it is hereditary past the hope of mortal medicines or even Apollo’s cures. However, his children also have the keen ability to see all sides of the equation. And. Only they can look upon their father without automatically focusing on one face or the other.
Family ;;
Caelus - father - god of the Sky
Terra - mother - goddess of the Earth
(immortal family will not be listed as it is too extensive)
Marie Ashby (nee Winters) - demigod daughter
Alden Nolan - demigod son
History ;; At the beginning of time-... actually, before time. Saturn was not yet breathing. There was Terra the Earth and Caelus the Sky. They were deeply in love, but their children were fearful. Janus, the two-faced god of decisions, gateways, and the like, was actually quite time. A number of his siblings were giants or monsters. Then the Titans came along and separated the Earth and Sky and Janus, seeing the wiseness of this decision, pledged allegiance to Saturn and was accepted among them while the less pleasant of his siblings were hunted. So much for family love, but that was immortal life in those harsh days. Then came the incident with Saturn swallowing his children (and a rock). Janus watched from the sidelines as that mess happened. He knew his place. Until Jupiter came and freed his siblings in the nastiest way possible. Then Janus joined them and acted as advisor in helping them defeat Saturn and imprison the Titans.
However, for his original involvement with the Titans, he was given a minor role and not welcomed on Olympus. So what did he do? He used his gifts to make them miserable. Them, and the heroes they chose. Achilles? Who do you think advised that archer? Daedalus? Yes, the old man became a murderer because of Janus's games. Hercules? Okay, that was mostly Juno, but who do you think informed her all the time? One of his absolute favorite games is to mess with the Olympians with the simple fact that they are split between two different peoples. He'll sometimes walk up Vulcan and call him Hephaestus just to get his reaction. It's usually really funny (except Mars, who is always violent, as usual). The whole crippling headache and inability to do anything is Janus' favorite thing to watch. A few he leaves alone though. Pluto, Proserpina, Mercury, to name a few. They were always nice to him, so he is to them.
Which brings him into the modern day. He has kids, yes, demigod ones as he has no wife and probably never will. He's okay with that. He picks his company carefully, though. Janus has odd taste in company. The more complex the individual, the more he likes to be around them. The ones who act happy, but hide horrible things, he likes to talk to them. He relates to them. So unfortunately, his children have a hard way of it, because usually his picks in female companionship are not wholly normal. Not even close. He travels a lot, popping in on quests or even just solo missions to do whatever. Sometimes he observes, but most of the time, he is very much involved. Though if his own parents are involved, he stays far far away. As far away as one can from the ground and the sky, that is.
