Had to look perfect. He buttoned up the pale blue dress shirt all the way and grabbed the bowtie he’d picked out. He held it up, dangling, and decided he had no idea how to tie it. He dropped it on the table in the dressing room piled with the various things he had picked out from around the store. The cleanup staff would hate him. He dug until he found the idiot-proof one. It was already tied. All it needed was to be clipped on. Which he deftly did and checked himself in the mirror, immediately cringing when he realized he’d forgotten to zip the black dress pants. He hurriedly did that and did the inspection one more time. Yes, this looked perfect. Not too too much, but still dashing. He’d have to work with his hair though. He licked his hand and made an attempt. It did not help. So he messed it up again.
He pulled and unbuttoned and unzipped and slipped everything back off again and folded – yes, he did know how – what he did want and walked out carrying that on one arm and the leftovers on the other. He draped them over the bar, since they had no hangers, of the return to floor rack. He walked over to the counter and set the things down. The too-attractive-for-this clerk, obviously a son of Venus, beamed a little too winningly. “Valentine’s?” he asked simply, referring to the need for such nice clothing. Ethan, not wanting to divulge the fact that his fiancé may not be alive on that particular holiday, just nodded, pretending the whole way. “Yeah, actually, where can I get the best flowers?” Lilith would like flowers. “I would say that traitor has good stuff, but don’t give her business. There’s a place on fifth.” Ethan nodded. “Thanks, man.” He paid for the clothes and carried the bag out to buy flowers. His girl might die soon, but he was going to make sure she was smiling the entire way to that last moment.
